7. The Power of Word – Dialogues in the Arts

The Power of Word – Dialogues in the Arts held at the Learning Garden is jointly organized by the Independent Learning Centre, Hong Kong Literature Research Centre, Office of the Arts Administrator, Tolopoem, the University Library System and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature.  In September, the Power of Word organized a number of talks in the Learning Garden which covered various themes including documentary photography, Polish poetry and Cantonese opera.  These talks were very well-received and audiences responded enthusiastically with encouraging feedback.

I Walk Therefore I Shoot - A Record of HK demonstrations

Mr. Birdy Chu(朱迅)is a photojournalist.  During the 1989 pro-democracy movement led by Beijing students, millions of Hong Kong citizens participated in demonstration to show their support.  Mr. Chu was stunned by the image.  Since then, he has participated in various demonstrations, and recorded the social movement in the city with his camera.  Mr. Chu shared his experience on how he thinks about documentary photography with the audience.  A photo exhibition of "I Walk Therefore I Shoot" was also held at the Learning Garden from 2nd to 23rd September, 2013.  These photos are selections of Mr. Chu's photo journal of Hong Kong social movements in the past decade taken from his newly published book "I Walk Therefore I Shoot".

Poetry in Daily Life - Wisława Szymborska and Tadeusz Różewicz

Wei-Yun Lin-Górecka(林蔚昀)was born in 1982 in Taipei, Taiwan.  She studied in Comparative Studies in the Faculty of Polish Studies at Jagiellonian University.  In 2013, she received the Order of Merit in Polish Culture from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.  Ms. Lin shared with the audience the poetry in daily life of two famous Polish poets Wisława Szymborska and Tadeusz Różewicz.

Sixty Years in Cantonese Opera

Renowned Cantonese Opera artist Yuen Siu-fai (阮兆輝) has been an educator of Cantonese Opera for years, and actively promoting Cantonese Opera in schools.  Mr. Yuen made his debut as a child actor at the age of 7 before taking up Cantonese opera.  In the talk of Sixty Years in Cantonese Opera, he shared his life in movies over the past 60 years with the audience.
