4. University Library: Donation Ceremony of the Handwritten Letters to Lai Chi-hsi from Distinguished Contemporaries

The University Library System has recently received donations from Mr. T.C. Lai.  They are seventy-eight handwritten letters from forty-two authors in one hundred and twenty-nine pages that were originally collected by his late father, Mr. Lai Chi-hsi (1865-1937), a renowned Qing Dynasty Hanlin Scholar who came to Hong Kong after the 1911 revolution and established the Chinese Department of the University of Hong Kong and the Hok Hoi Library. 

To celebrate the occasion, a donation ceremony was held on January 20, 2009 with the donor, Mr. T.C. Lai (Chairman of the Hok Hoi Library), Ms. Janet Tang (Director of the Hok Hoi Library), Dr. Colin Storey (University Librarian), Professor Peter Lam (Director of the CUHK Art Museum), Professor KY Cheung (Department of Chinese Language & Literature) and other University staff members attending.

5. MAN Literary Festival Announcement

The Art of Translation -- Dr. Julia Lovell, the author of several books on China including The Great Wall: China Against the World and The Politics of Cultural Capital: China's Quest for a Nobel Prize in Literature, will talk about the pitfalls in translation with Zhu Wen.  This session will be in English and Putonghua.

6. Publication Exhibition of Professor NG Cheuk-yiu at Chung Chi College Library

Professor Ng Cheuk-Yiu, Distinguished Professor from the University of California, Davis, has been invited as the Siu Lien Ling Wong Visiting Fellow 2008/2009.  Professor Ng is an alumnus of Chung Chi College and is known for his exceptional experimental research pioneering in VUV photoionization and photodissociation studies of molecules, radicals, and clusters with unprecedented accuracy.  Professor Ng has more than 280 research publications to his credit, including 257 refereed journal articles and 15 reviews.  Some of his publications are now exhibited at the Chung Chi College Library from now till March 16, 2009.  All are welcome.  For enquiry, please call 2609 6599.

7. E-Resources Week 2009 – a great success with your participation!

To promote the use of academic research resources, the University Library System organized a series of activities during January and February, including an online quiz, seminars, exhibits and games.  Finalists of the online quiz were awarded book coupons of $500 and joined the final competition held on February 5, competing for the grand prize which included a notebook computer.  Over 1,000 students and staff participated in this joyful and meaningful event.  Photos and detailed information are available at http://eweek09.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/.

8. The Opening Ceremony of the "Literary Realm: Exhibition of Select Editions of Modern Chinese Literature" and the Launching Ceremony of the Modern Chinese Literature Research Portal

An exhibition "The Literary Realm: Exhibition of Select Editions of Modern Chinese Literature" was jointly organized by the Chinese Language and Literature Department and the University Library System of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from January 13 to February 28, 2009 at the University Library Exhibition Hall. 

Prof. Chen Sihe (Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Fudan University), Prof. Chen Zishan (Department of Chinese Language and Literature, East China Normal University), Prof. Zhu Qiang (University Librarian, Peking University), Prof. Ge Jianxiong (University Librarian, Fudan University), Ms Zhang Jingbo (Deputy Librarian, East China Normal University), Prof. Chan Hung Kan (Chairman, CUHK Chinese Language and Literature Department ), and Dr. Colin Storey (CUHK University Librarian) officiated at the opening ceremony of the Exhibition at the University Library Exhibition Hall at 11 a.m. on January 13, 2009.  The exhibition highlighted works by major modern Chinese authors.
