2. The 5th International m-libraries Conference (May 27-30, 2014)

Hosted by The Open University (UK) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the 5th International m-libraries Conference, entitled "m-libraries: From devices to people", will be held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from May 27-30, 2014.  More than 200 researchers, educators, technical developers, managers and library professionals from 27 countries / regions will gather to exchange their experience and generate ideas for future developments in mobile technology.

3. An Exhibition In Memory of Professor Rulan Chao Pian

Professor Rulan Chao Pian passed away on November 30, 2013 at the age of 91 in her Cambridge home, U.S..  In memory of Prof. Pian, the University Library System presents An Exhibition In Memory of Professor Rulan Chao Pian at the Chung Chi College Elisabeth Luce Moore Library from March 27 to June 2, 2014.

4. CUHK Golden Jubilee Celestial Civilian Scholarship on Hong Kong Literature 2013/14

CUHK Golden Jubilee Celestial Civilian Scholarship on Hong Kong Literature 2013/14 is now inviting applications from full-time CUHK students taking undergraduate or research postgraduate programmes.  There will be two scholarships of HK$10,000 each available.  Applicants must submit a research paper / thesis / dissertation, written in either English or Chinese, on Hong Kong literature and related fields; and submit a statement of 500-800 words, written in either English or Chinese, on how they made use of the Hong Kong Literature Collection for their research paper / thesis / dissertation.

5. New subscription to the South China Morning Post

The Library has recently subscribed to the scmp.com database (SCMP) that provides access to articles from the South China Morning Post over the last 10 years.  Students and staff are welcome to access scmp.com here <http://easyaccess.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/login?url=http://www.scmp.com> and search for SCMP articles with images for their assignments and research.

6. The University Library System has added more than 10,000 volumes of Republican China re-print publications

"Mingguo Jicui" (Republican China re-print) is an academic collection of major publications from the Republican China period (1911-1949).  Republican China was the new era of innovation and the meeting of the East and the West in Chinese cultural history.

7. Turn your tablet into a virtual journal rack with Browzine!

BrowZine, an app for iPads and Android tablets, is now available for CUHK students and staff.  BrowZine lets you browse, read, and monitor scholarly journals in your subject areas - all in a format optimized for your iPad, Android tablet or Amazon Kindle Fire! If you find articles useful for your research, you may also store articles in your tablet for offline browsing or even export the record to RefWorks.

8. Learning Garden: Observation of the Relationship between an Air Balloon and the Virtual Underwater Learning Environment

A group of Master of Fine Arts students led by the lecturer Mr. Luke Ching gathered at the Learning Garden in the evening on the 20th February.  They were investigating the meaning of a virtual underwater learning space when it is influenced by an additional object in the form of a performance arts installation.  The Learning Path has two 50-metre-long curved tables situated in the Learning Garden with big skylight windows filled with a few inches of water above.  The Learning Garden area thus creates a landscape of virtual underwater learning space for this observation.

9. Research Café in May 2014

The second Research Café organized by the Library will be held on May 8, 2014 (Thu).  The Research Café is a new service to provide a series of informal and engaging events where research postgraduate students can get together, network, present their research to the University community, exchange ideas across disciplines, and polish presentation skills.

The Library has arranged a new series of talks on "How to Publish in Academic Journals" in 2014 for researchers and postgraduate students.

The talk “Guide to Getting Published - from an International Publisher's Viewpoints” was held in February 2014.  The speaker was Ms Ling-Fei Liu of Emerald Group Publishing.

 

11. General Education Books @ Kindle E-book Readers

Do you want to carry fewer books for your General Education classes? To encourage paperless reading habits, the Library is pleased to announce Kindle E-book Readers Lending Service.  Each Kindle Paperwhite e-Reader is preloaded with 10 to 13 Kindle e-books of selected titles from the General Education collection.  All library borrower card holders, excluding holders of the JULAC card, can borrow the Kindle at the Learning Garden Help Desk of the University Library for 7 days.

12. End of the Value Transfer Service (from the contact-only cards to the online account) on June 1, 2014

In line with the University's development of the Smart University ID Card, the Library's Add Value Machines and the Payflex charging devices for the contact-only smart cards were decommissioned in 2012 and 2013 respectively.  A free replacement of a contactless smart card and the transfer of the remaining value have also been arranged for the contact-only smart cards (including department copying/printing cards) since June 2012.

13. A Gentle Reminder - Returning Books and Paying Fines

Graduating students and leaving staff: Please be reminded to return all your borrowed library items and clear all outstanding fines, if any, before you leave the University.  Your record may be sent to the University authorities if there are any unreturned library items and/or outstanding fines.  Degree Certificates of graduates with outstanding debts to the University will be withheld until the accounts have been settled.
