6. Exhibition of Select Chinese Rare Books of Peking University Library

The University Library System and Peking University Library jointly held the "Exhibition of Select Chinese Rare Books of Peking University Library" from April 20 to April 30, 2005 at the Exhibition Hall of the University Library.  Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. Jao Tsung-i, Emeritus Professor of Chinese Language & Literature, officiated at the opening ceremony on April 20, 2005.

There were 47 titles with 111 volumes of Chinese rare books on display.  Among the 47 titles, 10 of them were classified as first class rare books which mean they were hand-written or printed in the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties, 7 were second class, 22 were third class and 8 were ordinary ancient books.  The classification of Chinese rare books is based on the Heritage Protection Law of China.  Website for the Exhibition has been set up for the public to view these treasures at http://www.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/Exhibition/PekingU/index.htm.  In addition to the Exhibition, two public lectures on topics related to the Exhibition were also conducted by two experts from Peking University Library on April 23 and April 30 respectively.
