1. Library Summer Certificate Course 2006

The University Library will organize a summer certificate course on information literacy skills from May 23 to 30, 2006.  After attending any 4 lessons, participants will be granted a certificate by the Library.

Lesson 1:  Introduction to information sources
Introduces various information sources and their characteristics.  Topics covered include primary and secondary sources, popular and scholarly sources, reference sources, Internet sources, as well as how to select the appropriate sources of information.

Lesson 2:  Basic electronic databases searching skills
Introduces the skills of using truncation, Boolean and proximity operators, field-specific search, indexes, thesaurus, set searching and alert service, etc.

Lesson 3:  How to find books, journal articles, conference proceedings, theses and audio-visual materials
Demonstrates advanced searches of library catalogues, indexes and abstracts to locate books, articles, theses and audio-visual materials, as well as information on current issues.

Lesson 4:  How to find and evaluate information on the Web
Overviews and demonstrates effective means of searching the Internet, as well as how to select and evaluate Internet resources for information.

Lesson 5:  How to cite and manage references using RefWorks
Demonstrates the skills of using Write-N-Cite to cite references in a paper and using RefWorks to create and format a bibliography or a reference list.
