7. The Art of Translation - Julia Lovell and Zhu Wen

The seminar "The Art of Translation – Julia Lovell and Zhu Wen" organized by the MAN Hong Kong International Literary Festival 2009 was held at the Chung Chi College Library on March 13, 2009.  More than 60 people joined this successful event.

One of the speakers of the seminar, Dr. Julia Lovell, is the author of several books on China including The Great Wall: China Against the World, 1000 BC-AD 2000 and The Politics of Cultural Capital: China's Quest for a Nobel Prize in Literature.  She has edited and translated in part Lust, Caution, a collection of short stories by Eileen Chang, and her translation of the complete fiction of Lu Xun will be published in 2009.  A lecturer in Chinese history at the University of London, she has translated several contemporary novels including I Love Dollars by Mr. Zhu Wen, another speaker of the seminar, who is a poet, novelist and filmmaker.  The English version of I Love Dollars was shortlisted for the 2008 Kiriyama Prize. Dr. Barry Steben chaired the talk to discuss about the pitfalls in translation with Dr. Julia Lovell and Mr. Zhu Wen.
