1. Greetings from the new University Librarian

Since joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong as University Librarian in early January 2013 I have been overwhelmed with the warm welcome I have received, but even more impressed with the quality of the University Library System.

In my first week the Library's architecturally stunning Learning Garden hosted a visit from the University Grants Committee, who made full use of the open study space to meet and listen to students.  Later that same week I took part in the opening ceremony of From the Treasure House: Jewels from the Library of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, an exhibition jointly organised by the Library and the Art Museum as part of University's 50th Anniversary programme.  These events symbolise the Library's strengths; rich collections to be used in research, learning and teaching; innovative study space and support enabling collaboration, and the ability to work in partnership to deliver outstanding events and services.

I can claim no credit for these strengths, and must acknowledge the vision and hard work of my predecessor Dr Storey and Library colleagues as they focused on delivering infrastructure and services for '3+3+4'.  I am fortunate to be able to build on these developments as I lead the Library into a new era.  I look forward to hearing from, and meeting with, students, faculty and alumni over the next few months as we begin consultation on a fresh Library strategy that will determine priorities over the coming years.
