Professor So Man-jock (1921-1997) was a renowned scholar of the Chinese canons. From 1965, he was Professor of Chinese in United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he lectured on the canons and philosophies of the early masters as well as on shi and ci poetry, literary criticism and on Chinese educational thought. He enjoyed great popularity throughout his lectureship. Professor So received a fine education as befits a member of a cultivated household. Since early childhood he was taught not only the classics but also calligraphy; his style being characterised by a classical elegance that harked back to two earlier generations of his family. Professor So had generous instincts in the art of reciting classical pieces and was determined to advocate what is generally known as 'rhythmic recitation'. He was a popular guest of honour on both sides of the Taiwan straits. A classical poet in his own right, Professor So was also an avid promoter of poetry. He gathered some of his students to form the 'Ming Society' where he continued his teaching on the classics in general and on classical poetry in particular.
