Organized by the University Library System of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the international conference "The Academic Librarian: Dinosaur or Phoenix? Die or Fly in Library Change Management" was held successfully on April 11-12, 2007. During these two days, over 170 librarians and scholars from all over the world shared and exchanged their views on the following four main themes of the conference:
1. Academic Library Change Management
2. Organizational Preparation and the Changing Workplace
3. The Librarian and the Faculty, Student Body, and the General Public
4. The Right Staff?
Officiating at the opening ceremony was Professor Liu Pak Wai, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Dr. Colin Storey, University Librarian of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Dai Longji, University Librarian of the Peking University, delivered the opening keynote speech. This was followed by other insightful keynote speeches given by three renowned scholars: Mr. Brian Schottlaender, University Librarian of the University of California, San Diego; Mr. Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President and Chief Strategist of OCLC and Professor Peter Brophy, Professor of Information Management of Manchester Metropolitan University.
A total of 6 concurrent sessions were held with 39 thought-provoking papers being presented and discussed. Another conference, the 9th Fiesole Collection Development Retreat Preconference was also held as one of the current sessions of the Conference.
