6. Library Workshops for Postgraduate Students

The Library is pleased to offer the following workshops for postgraduate students from January to February 2013.

Program 1: Advanced Research Skills in Humanities and Social Sciences
This workshop provides advanced library research skills for postgraduate students in humanities and social sciences.  Using the Library Catalogue and electronic databases, it will demonstrate how to (1) identify a potential topic for research; (2) evaluate the relatedness of collected information; and (3) reference these bibliographies in your paper/thesis.

Program 2: Finding Theses and Dissertations
Demonstrates how to locate theses and dissertations submitted by students from universities in Hong Kong, China, North America, and the United Kingdom.

Program 3: Bibliographies Made Easy - Managing Citations Using RefWorks
Demonstrates how to produce bibliographies and in-text references in a variety of citation styles (e.g. APA, Chicago, MLA, Harvard, etc.) using RefWorks, a web-based bibliography management tool.

Program 4: Publishing in Academic Journals: Tips from Taylor & Francis to help you succeed 
The Library has arranged with Taylor & Francis, one of the world's leading publishers of scholarly journals in Humanities, Social Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Science and Technology, to provide an author workshop for researchers and postgraduate students.  The session will offer advice on presenting a paper in the best possible light, choosing the correct journal to send it to and highlighting the most common reasons why a paper is rejected.

Topics covered:

  • How you can present your manuscript in the best possible light?
  • Which is the correct journal for your manuscript?
  • What are the common reasons why a manuscript is rejected?
  • How you can avoid some of the common pitfalls?
  • How to optimize citations to your article?
  • Q & A
