5. Dialogues in the Arts

The Power of Word -- Dialogue in the Arts held at the Learning Garden of the University Library is jointly organised by the Independent Learning Centre, Hong Kong Literature Research Centre, Office of the Arts Administrator, Tolopoem, the University Library System and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature.

The talks were held once a month from February 1 to Apr 5, 2013.  The topics for talks covered the life and death of animals, interviews with Hong Kong writers and the creation of novels.  Ms. Cheung Yuen Man (張婉雯), Mr. Mak Chi Ho (麥志豪), Hong Kong writers Mr. Liao Weitang (廖偉棠) and Mr. Dung Kai Cheung (董啟章) were invited to speak at the talks.  The talks were very successful and audiences responded enthusiastically with encouraging feedback.

Who's controlling the fate of animals?

The first talk in February was on the right of animals, emphasizing the importance of love and care of animals.  "Animals seek for survival, but not death.  Even ants treasure life, let alone humans.  In reality, who's controlling the fate of animals?  How we harmonise between humans and animals reflects our values and respect of life."  The speakers were Ms. Cheung Yuen Man and Mr. Mak Chi Ho.

Learn more about Hong Kong writers

How much do you know about Hong Kong writers?  For the second talk in March, Mr. Liao Weitang, discussed his impressions gathered from interviews with Hong Kong writers.  From the presentation, we got a glimpse and understanding of different Hong Kong writers.

The capacity of Novels

How to define the capacity of novels?  Is it related to the number of words or the depth of work?  The speaker of the third talk in April, Mr. Dung Kai Cheung, who had written a number of novels, shared with us his experience in creating novels.  He also talked about the capacity of novels.  More than 130 people attended the talk.  With a large applause, the talk series for this academic year was completed very successfully.

The next series of talks will start in September.  Details of the talks will be announced soon.  Stay tuned.

Video recordings are now available at YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/CUHKLibraries.
