3. "Exhibition of Early Hong Kong and Macau Publications" & "Hong Kong Macau Periodicals Network"

An "Exhibition of Early Hong Kong and Macau Publication" jointly organized by the University Library System and the University of Macau University was held in the Exhibition Hall of the University Library from 5 to 26 September, 2006. Officiating at the opening ceremony at 4:00 p.m. on 4 September, 2006 were Dr. Colin Storey, University Librarian and Dr. Paul W.T. Poon, Librarian of the University of Macau Library.

Featured in the Exhibition were over 100 of mostly pre-1950s publications, with 62 items on Hong Kong from the CUHK Libraries and 49 items on Macau from the University of Macau Library.  Publications displayed included directories, annual reports and special issues of schools, religious bodies, business organizations and welfare bodies.  It also included early exhibition brochures, textbooks, newspapers and anthologies of early poets and artists.  The Exhibition contained panels displaying seven areas on the two places, namely, History, Commerce & Industry, Education, Culture, Newspaper, Religion and Social Welfare.  The Exhibition will be moved to the University of Macau Library from 22 November to 21 December, 2006.

The event also featured an official launching of the "Hong Kong Macau Periodicals Network", a recent cooperation by the CUHK Library and the University of Macau Library.  The Database provides indexes to over 300 Chinese and bi-lingual publications published in Hong Kong and Macau (over 450,000 records), with a focus on Humanities and Social Sciences.  Most of the periodicals indexed start from 1980, but important academic journals are indexed starting from its first issue.  The earliest journal indexed is the first Chinese journal in Hong Kong, Chinese Serial, published in 1853.
