RFID (Radio-frequency identification) is a proven technology for enhancing workflow and efficiency in libraries around the world. Recently, there has been an emerging trend of adopting RFID technology, both in providing library services, as well as in automating labour intensive routines in academic libraries in Hong Kong. With the aim to verify the RFID functionalities in the actual CUHK library environment, ULS kicked off the RFID Pilot Scheme at the New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library (NAL) on January 11, 2010. The scope of the Scheme is currently confined to the General Education Collection in NAL in order to collect performance statistics of the RFID technology for future comparison and benchmarking. Borrowers can now check-out books from this collection at the RFID Self-check Station directly located near the Collection. Up to five volumes can be checked-out at the RFID Self-check Station concurrently.
