3. Library Information Literacy Certificate Course : September - November 2006

After attending any five courses on information literacy skills, participants will be granted a certificate by the Library.  Students, in groups of ten or more, can request library courses to suit their information needs and schedules.  For detailed information, please contact the staff at the Reference Counter.

PROGRAMMES:

Programme 1: Library Orientation
Topics covered include library services and resources, your borrowing privileges, how to renew and place holds on library materials in the Library Catalogue, and a library tour.

Programme 2: Advanced Library Catalogue Searching
Demonstrates the advanced techniques for searching the CUHK Library Catalogue.  Topics covered include the use of operators, field-specific searches, types of materials, HKALL, etc.

Programme 3: Basic Database Searching Skills
Introduces skills for using Boolean & proximity operators and truncation, skills of limiting search terms to specific fields and year coverage, skills of using indexes and online thesauri.

Programme 4: E-books
Demonstrates how to locate Library's ebooks and how to use NetLibrary.

Programme 5: Electronic Resources on Specific Subjects

Programme 6: Free Information on the Web
Demonstrates the use of search engines to locate free information on the Web.

Programme 7: Document Information Sources with RefWorks
Demonstrates how to use RefWorks, a web-based bibliography and database manager, to produce bibliographies and in-text references in a variety of citation styles (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.).  Topics covered include setting up a RefWorks Account, creating folders, importing references from databases, creating a bibliography in a variety of formats/styles, and using Write-N-Cite to create in-text references.
