1. Apus Nipalensis and the Library Logo

The house swift has a strong association with the Library, with the eaves of University Library home to the largest colony in Hong Kong.  Have a look at our Facebook page for some videos of the swifts' and their nests.  Given this close connection, a swift was the obvious choice for a new Library logo, designed to stand out not just on paper but also on the screen.  We have used the University purple colour and the design visually mimics a tradition Chinese seal, aiming to embody the University motto of linking tradition with modernity, and East with West.

At the same time we have standardized the Chinese wording for the Library to 香港中文大學圖書館, and in English have decided to drop the word System as it was confusing; it could be read as referring to the computer system for the Library, not the Library itself! From the middle of August we will be known as The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library or CUHK Library for short.  The individual libraries that comprise CUHK Library will be keeping their existing names.

The change to the name and logo will be introduced gradually.  Where we can, for example on the web, we will make the changes quickly, but for stationery, name cards, etc we will try to be green and use up existing supplies first.
