Impressive Learning Experience at the University of Washington, United States (Ms LAW Wing Ki Winky, Year 4, Urban Studies)

Unlike some students in Hong Kong, the students at the University of Washington are very enthusiastic. In lessons, my classmates and I usually discussed different issues together. They were never afraid of voicing out their ideas; sometimes we even spoke more than the professors. The most unforgettable thing is how supportive students were to one another. When preparing for presentations, my classmates and I gave advice to one another. We encouraged the presenters by saying 'well done' and 'good job' after their presentations. Trivial as these words may seem, they were actually very important. With the support of such encouraging classmates, I have become more attentive and active in class, because I am no longer afraid of making mistakes.

Work Hard, Play Hard (Mr CHAN Yu Hin Addi, Year 4, Enrichment Mathematics)

I joined an exchange programme to ETH Zurich, Switzerland in Term 2, 2016–17. This exchange experience has brought me three benefits.

First of all, it has broadened my global vision. Before participating in this programme, I did not know the names of some big European cities, let alone their cultural, political or religious backgrounds. After my journey, I have acquired much new knowledge beyond my major, Mathematics, through travelling and communicating with people in Europe.

In addition, I have become more independent. For example, I had seldom done advanced planning before I went to Switzerland; however, I made early plans for almost everything during my time there. As a responsible tenant, I always did my share of house chores by myself.

Most importantly, this exchange experience has changed my view on studying and living. My philosophy of life in the past was that I should devote most of my time to studying Mathematics because it is what I love. However, I have come to recognise the importance of work-life balance now. Equally splitting my time between studying and enjoying life is essential and is not necessarily counterproductive.
