By Mr LI Yi (Class of 2017, Electronic Engineering)
In the summer of 2013, I graduated from my high school in Beijing, and was admitted to CUHK. Before then, I had never seriously considered the option of entering a university in Hong Kong; neither had I anticipated how much I would learn in the following four years. Now that I have graduated and commenced further studies in the United States, I am more than glad to share with you my memories of life at CUHK.
Welcomed by the College Founding Master, Prof Kenneth YOUNG, and one of my high school seniors who had also entered CW Chu College a year earlier, I decided to join CWC in its second year of admission. Being among the first 150 admitted students of the College, I was impressed by the intimacy among students, teachers and staff. Thanks to the variety of activities (movie nights, workshops, High Table Dinners, team sports and so forth) organised by the College and the students, I have mostly enjoyed my time at CWC, and have never regretted choosing this College.
Being four years younger than most of my fellows, I was extremely fortunate to be mentored by Prof YOUNG and Prof WONG Suk-Ying at the College. They provided me with great help in my adaptation to college life, and have kept close track of my personal growth since then. Majoring in Electronic Engineering, I had Prof Tan LEE as my advisor, who guided me a lot in my major courses, research projects, as well as many of my decisions on applying to graduate school. The professors and teachers at CUHK, perhaps in different ways, have all taken great responsibility for educating their students; I probably will not achieve what I want without their influences.
During the four years' life at CUHK and CWC, I made some of my best friends. Some of them, like myself, come from mainland China, while many others are local students and international students from all over the world. I do not see myself as an outgoing person, yet my fellows have always been friendly, considerate and supportive. They are willing to share with me their thoughts and emotions, despite our possible differences in viewpoints, languages or cultures. I wish that the cultural diversity would continue to promote, rather than obstruct, the in-depth communication among students in the University.
It is also in the past four years that I experienced some of my most memorable moments. I was fortunate and honoured to be able to have a lunch at CW Chu College with Prof Charles KAO, the winner of 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his great contribution in the development of fiber optic communications, and the founder of Department of Electronics at CUHK. Being a student in Electronic Engineering, I was deeply inspired by the scientific career of Prof KAO, and was determined to contribute to our world with all my efforts. Throughout my undergraduate studies there were moments when I felt huge pressure from the coursework or frustrations in research; nonetheless I was able to pull through the difficulties and achieved an overall satisfying academic result.
I have now begun my doctoral studies at UC San Diego in the United States. For the next five years, I will be devoting myself to the field I have long been attracted by—deep learning and machine intelligence. Thanks to the experiences and lessons I had in Hong Kong, the transition to this new environment has been smooth; yet I understand more than anyone else that there is still a lot for me to learn and improve. I anticipate challenges and obstacles ahead, and I am ready to confront them with the best of myself.
Looking back on the years at CUHK, I have grown step-by-step from a young dreamer to a doer who actively pursues his dream, with the faith of brightening the future of our world. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all my teachers, fellow students, and my family who have encouraged and supported me throughout my studies. I will never forget those valuable memories with them. Meanwhile, I sincerely hope that CUHK and CWC will continue to offer the best and most comprehensive education in the future, and that my fellow students will all become among the best in whatever fields they specialise in.
By Ms LEUNG Shuk Yin (Class of 2017, Nursing)
I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Nursing in 2017. Currently, I am working as a registered nurse in Prince of Wales Hospital.
Being a novice in a fast-paced workplace, I miss my university life. I was one of the founding students of the College. The College and we grew up together 'physically' and 'mentally' day by day. We witnessed the establishment of the hostel building and the motto, vision and mission of the College.
I was one of the members of the College Provisional Student Union, table tennis and basketball teams. I also took part in organising the College orientation camp for freshmen. I treasure those times with my friends when we lived and worked hard together in the College. In my freshman year, I had a dream that we could organise at our College an event as big as those at the other Colleges. My College mates made my dream come true. The second CWC Festival was held in early November 2017. Although I could not join the activity due to a clash with my work schedule, I could imagine the fascinating moments from the photos shared on social media.
Thank you, CW Chu College, for making my university life wonderful.
