The First High Table Dinner (2015–16)
The FirstHigh Table Dinner of the academic year 2015–16 was held on 9 September 2015. Following a welcome speech by the College Master, the Guest of Honour Mr Alan CK WONG, SBS, JP, gave an inspiring speech on 'From biology student to public servant'.
Mr Wong, a CUHK graduate (1977), just retired from Government service as Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation. Prior to that posting, he had held a wide range of positions, including Commissioner for Transport, and Deputy Secretary-General of UGC. Mr Wong shared the story about how his life had changed, first from a Biology student to an Economics student, and then from a business executive to a public servant. Mr Wong pinpointed the most important factors of a successful career and life: self-confidence, courage and humility. One may never make a start without self-confidence, which comes from the quest for knowledge through education. Knowledge is power, and continues to support us throughout our career or even our lives, because the world is changing rapidly, especially in science and technology. He encouraged students to develop their own characters and personalities, as well as to know their own strengths and weaknesses.
The Second High Table Dinner (2015–16)
As part of the celebration of the College Founders' Day and the Naming Ceremony of the Marina Tse Chu Building, the second High Table Dinner was held on 12 November 2015, attended by members of the Committee of Overseers and other College guests, in addition to 300 students. The guest of honour on the occasion was Prof CHEUNG Yan Leung Stephen, BBS, JP, President of The Hong Kong Institute of Education, who spoke on 'Sharing of Life Experience'.
Prof Cheung drew students' attention to the importance of three qualities that define competitiveness nowadays: trilingualism, communication skills and confidence. He encouraged students to cultivate these abilities, to stay connected to modern developments, and to develop a spirit of giving back to society after graduation. He also advised students to have patience, resilience and strong EQ, which will help them stand out from the crowd. Prof Cheung also encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones by joining exchange and internship programmes in order to gain more life experience. He shared his personal experience of postgraduate study in France, where he was inspired by a rich culture that encourages innovations, and where he met his wife.
The night was rounded up by a piano performance by Mr Chan Yu Hin Addi, a Year 2 student majoring in Mathematics, who had over ten years of experience playing the piano and taking part in local and international competitions, where he had won many prizes. Addi played Grande Valse Brillante Op. 18, a waltz of elegance and grace, as a gift to Mr David Chu and his family in honour of their many contributions to CW Chu College.
