College Service Team

Summer Service Project
With support from the I • CARE Service Projects Funding Scheme and the DH Chen Foundation, the CW Chu College Service Team 2014–15, comprising nine students, was formed and launched the project entitled ʻUnderstanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths Through a Social Service Endeavour 2015ʼ in the summer of 2015, the third in a series that began in 2013.

In collaboration with Po Leung Kuk CW Chu College (PLKCWC), a total of 40 Secondary 2 and 3 students from PLKCWC participated in the Service Project.  Six of them who had taken part in the same project last year acted as facilitators, promoting active engagement in groups through a series of activities. Following a pre-camp ice-breaking session, a 3-day-2-night camp was held at Breakthrough Youth Village from 15 to 17 July 2015.  The Service Team and 19 CWC student helpers organized activities such as mass games, a rope course and student sharing sessions.  Participants had greater confidence and improved communication skills.

The Closing Ceremony was held on 19 September 2015 at the College. About 30 students of PLKCWC who had participated in this year's project attended the ceremony. Representatives of the project sponsors, i.e, the DH Chen Foundation, Breakthrough and the I • CARE Programme, as well as the Principal and teachers of PLKCWC, College teachers and staff joined the Ceremony to hear reflections from the Service Team members and participants on what they had gained in this project.

Student Reflection by Chan Tin Lok Benjamin (Year 3)
'It's more blessed to give than to receive.' As a social work student, I believe that everyone has the actualizing tendency, irrespective of the background and conditions. Nevertheless, our circumstances and available resources may hinder our pursuit of life goals and dream. Through serving the students in the PLKCWC College, I was grateful that I could enter the life of this group of socially disadvantaged students. From designing the programme, recruiting participants, implementing the projects, conducting evaluation, it is encouraging to witness the participants' growth and improvement. With better self-understanding and exploration, these students could set their goals and be determined to achieve it. It is also meaningful for the service team to continue the spirit and strive for improvement each year. Not only are the disadvantaged benefited, students also grow and learn much through the process of giving support.
