News: Lingnan Culture Studies Research Paper Competition 2022 Award Winners |
The award winners of the Lingnan Culture Studies Research Paper Competition 2022, organisedby the Research Programme for Lingnan Culture, Institute of Chinese Studies, CUHK, are officially announced. The Competition aims to promote international academic research on Lingnan culture, as well as to encourage local and overseas doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows who are aspiring to conduct in-depth research in the field. The competition received up to 50 research papers, which are subject to assessment by the selection committee.
The award ceremony will be broadcast on Zoom on 20 April 2023, we are honoured to invite Prof. Ching May Bo, Head and Professor of the Department of Chinese and History of the City University of Hong Kong, as the keynote speaker to deliver a talk on an interesting topic “The Lychee is ‘hot’ and the Star Fruit tastes subtle: multiple interpretations of Lingnan local products”.

News: Young Scholars’ Forum in Chinese Studies 2023 Call for Paper Proposals – The Digital Turn and Chinese Studies: Data, Method and Meaning |
Co-organised by Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies and the Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
The Ninth Young Scholars’ Forum in Chinese Studies will be held on 7–8 September 2023. With the theme of The Digital Turn and Chinese Studies: Data, Method and Meaning, the Forum is now open for abstract submissions to gather young scholars across the globe to explore how the advancement and application of digital technology is transforming the various sub-fields of Chinese Studies and informing new research avenues into China's past and present. |

News: ICS Chinese Culture Series – Chinese Calligraphy Workshop |
This Workshop is a foundational class in Chinese calligraphy. The Workshop focuses on two styles of calligraphy, namely “kaishu” and “xingshu”. A series of 10 workshops were conducted from September 2022 to January 2023, to enable 16 participants to master the two styles.
Dr. Chan Kwun Nam, Phil, Associate Curator (Painting and Calligraphy), introduced calligraphy classics to lay the foundation for understanding the inheritance of Chinese calligraphy to deepen students’ understanding of calligraphy and cultivate interest in Chinese culture. |

News: Fai Chun Writing for the Chinese New Year 2023 |
On January 18, 2023, the Chinese Culture Research Institute held a “Fai Chun Writing for the Chinese New Year 2023” in the courtyard of the institute. Dr. Chan Kwun Nam, Phil, the instructor of the “ICS Chinese Culture Series – Chinese Calligraphy Workshop”, and a group of students were invited to write Fai Chun for CUHK students and faculty, attracting more than 200 participants, with a continuous flow of people queuing up. The festive atmosphere was strong on that day, and the institute also prepared a gift box of New Year’s food for the participants. They wrote auspicious words and returned home happily. On the day of the event, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of CUHK's founding, Dr. Chan spontaneously wrote a congratulatory couplet to celebrate the anniversary. |

At the beginning of the new year, most economists and investment institutions make predictions on the outlook of China’s economy. Behind those statistics, more concern should be given to the direction of China’s economic transition in the post-pandemic era. Complete Collection of Stele Inscriptions in Hong Kong Temples: Historical Records with Images, 1274–2021 (in Chinese, 3 volumes) is a comprehensive collection of stele inscriptions from existing Chinese temples (excluding Buddhist and Daoist monasteries in general, apart from a few exceptions) in Hong Kong, covering the Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and the outlying islands. A total of 455 inscriptions are featured, arranged according to the 130 temples in which the steles are located.
