All Year 1 students of the College have to pledge to abide by the College Honour Code in the Honour Code Pledging Ceremony, usually held in Term 1 of each academic year. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ceremony for the 2020 cohort was postponed to Term 2, 2020–21, in the hope that it could be arranged physically if the pandemic subsided. In view of the new wave of the coronavirus outbreak in Hong Kong in November 2020, it was finally decided that the Ceremony would be held online on 29 January 2021.

The online Ceremony was hosted by members of the Eighth Student Honour Code Committee (SHCC). Prof Stephen HALL, Advisor of the SHCC and Chair of the Student Discipline Committee, was invited to introduce the history and practice of the Honour Code system in overseas tertiary institutions and its development at the College. He also shared the CUHK Principles of Community put forth under the recently promulgated ‘Diversity and Inclusion Policy’. These principles are vital for ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the CUHK community and for serving as a standard for our personal and collective behaviour, and are therefore closely connected to the Honour Code of the College.

Mr Alok Kumar MANAV, Chair of the Eighth SHCC, introduced the spirit, organisation and roles of the SHCC as well as the complaint procedures and relevant guidelines for handling breaches of the Honour Code. Other members of the Eighth SHCC also took this opportunity to introduce themselves and greet all new students. Alok then led the new students to make a solemn pledge of the Honour Code with their right hands on their hearts. After the oral pledging, the new students signed the Honour Code certificates to promise to be self-disciplined.

Prof Wai-Yee CHAN, College Master, Prof Thomas AU, Associate Master and Dean of Students, Prof Kenneth YOUNG, College Fellow and Ms Margaret KOO, College Affiliate, witnessed the Ceremony.
