The 100,000th graduate of CU - Ms Wong Wai Fun, a 2006 PhD graduate in Chemistry
The First 100,000…

This is 'E' here again sharing with you interesting stories about alumni affairs and the University!

There are 100,000 reasons for a joyous celebration this month, as the number of graduates of the University in terms of degrees conferred and including those recorded by the founding Colleges before the establishment of the University has already exceeded 100,000!

According to the database of the Alumni Affairs Office (AAO), a total of 102,392 graduates was recorded as of October 31, 2006. Our lucky 100,000th graduate is Ms Wong Wai Fun, a 2006 Chemistry PhD. When asked about how she felt being the 100,000th graduate of the CUHK, Wong could not hide her thrills and said that it was a great surprise to her. "E" found out the "surprise" only attested to Wong's being a downright CUHK person, from her undergraduate studies in Chemistry as a Chung Chi graduate in 2002 to her subsequent admission to the MPhil and PhD programmes. What's more, since her graduation this summer, Wong has joined her alma mater once again as Assistant Professor of the Chemistry Department.

You may be wondering how the 100,000th graduate can be identified? In fact, once their graduate status is confirmed by the University Senate (normally in August for undergraduates and throughout the year for postgraduates), graduates will become CU alumni. Their data will then be sent to the AAO by the Registry or the Graduate School Office through several batches. When the last batch of graduates' data of the Class of 2006 was sent to AAO this October, their data will be updated in AAO's database. By tracing back these data, the 100,000th lucky graduate can be easily identified.

Join us in celebrating the 100,000th mark in 100,000 ways; send your congratulatory wishes, messages or any other tokens to Wai Fan, our 100,000th graduate, via AAO.
