The former site of NA College in Kweilin Street will be demolished next year
Those Were the Days…The Former Site of NA College

The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) announced earlier this year its plan to demolish 17 buildings in Lai Chi Kok Road/ Kweilin Street and Yee Kuk Street in 2007. This has triggered some discussion among CU alumni, especial NA alumni, as one of the affected buildings is the former site of NA College in Kweilin Street.

Dating back from the1950's, Dr. Ch'ien Mu, founder of NA College, and a group of scholars from Mainland China rented 6 flats in Kweilin Street, furnished them into classrooms and a student hostel and started New Asia College. The College had a humble beginning. For the first 2 years since its establishment, the number of enrollment was less than 100 students. Despite the hardships, Dr Ch'ien and other founders of the College were capable of coping with the challenges of inadequate resources. The era of NA College in Kweilin Street marked a significant chapter in the history of the College.

Right after the URA's redevelopment plan had announced, the management of the College started negotiating with the relevant government departments for collecting the monumental items such as classroom doors, number plate of the building, student desks and chairs before the reconstruction. Meetings with URA representatives had also been arranged to discuss the feasibility of setting up a signpost or memorial plaque after the re-development.

Recently, with the assistance of the College, the Cable TV News Channel broadcast a feature story on the former site in Kweilin Street. For details of the clip, please click here. Meanwhile, the College has also commissioned students of the Department of Architecture to take photos of the former site and its surrounding environment via Professor Puay-peng Ho, former Dean of Students of NA College and current University Dean of Students. Email notification of the above arrangements was sent to NA alumni on October 19.

If you have any memento of the former site (e.g. photos) to donate to the College or any comment on the preservation of the monumental items of the former site, please email Dr. Peter Man, the College Secretary of New Asia College at peterman@cuhk.edu.hk. Meanwhile, the New Asia College Alumni Association will pay special visit to the former site of NA College in Kweilin Street, as one of the highlights of its upcoming outing to be held on November 19 (Sun). For enquires or enrollment, please contact Mr. Tong Wai Chuen, President of the New Asia College (Email: tong@alumni.cuhk.edu.hk, Tel: 2806 0770 / 9236 1236).
