Forum on Hostel Fee
A forum about a proposed increase in the College hostel fee was hosted by Prof Thomas AU, Associate College Master and Dean of Students, on 26 February 2019. Around 25 students attended and actively raised questions about their concerns.
Mindful Flourishing Taster Workshop
The Mindful Flourishing Taster Workshop, co-organised by CUHK and New Life Rehabilitation Association, was held on 27 March 2019. It was hoped that through mindfulness, College students would learn to take better care of their mental health, more importantly, to understand their inner needs and find their meanings in life.
The workshop was hosted by a mindfulness ambassador who was a trained undergraduate student from the Psychology Department. He guided the participants to practise mindfulness through exercise, such as mindful stretching and mindful breathing. Resident Tutors, Miss Louise CHU and Mr Eric MAN, joined the workshop with the students. Together they learnt to observe their own bodily sensations, feelings, and thoughts.
Yin Yang Yoga for Beginners
Four Yin Yang Yoga sessions were organised in March 2019 by the Resident Tutor, Miss Louise CHU. Yin Yang Yoga combines two styles of yoga together that helps to calm and balance the mind and body, and to reduce stress and anxiety.
During the sessions, participants learnt both Yin Yoga and Yang Yoga. The former is a slower practice where poses are held for longer time, working on the deep, dense connective tissues and joints in the body, while the latter refers to a more active practice working on the muscles and blood flow, building strength, stamina and flexibility.
Students found yoga relaxing and easier than imagined. In particular, they appreciated that they could see their own improvements throughout the sessions and that, with the small class size, the instructor was able to correct their postures in person.
