Mr Benjamin Chan Awarded Scholarship for Outstanding Social Work Students

Mr Chan Tin Lok Benjamin, Year 3 student majoring in Social Work, has been awarded the Scholarship for Outstanding Social Work Students in April 2016.

Supported by the Y. F. Hui Social Work Trust Fund, the scholarship was presented by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Hong Kong Social Workers Association. Benjamin, one of the seven awardees across all institutions in Hong Kong, had been nominated by the Department of Social Work, CUHK.

Born with achondroplasia, Benjamin suffered and had operations when he was young. Moved by the support and care he received from his family and the clinical staff, he set the goal to become a social worker and to help those in need.

The College extends its hearty congratulations to Benjamin!

Miss Lee Bo Yee Shares Experience in Medical Conference

Miss Lee Bo Yee, Year 3 Medicine student, was awarded a subsidy by the College for her participation in the 11th International Symposium of Ophthalmology, held in Shantou from 30 October to 1 November 2015. She would like to share her joy and achievements with the College in the following paragraphs.

I was lucky enough to participate as a presenter in the International Symposium of Ophthalmology, co-organized by Guangdong Ophthalmological Society and the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

There were many talks on discoveries in the field, such as new surgical methods. One topic was on the use of stem cells. […] I found this remarkable because, after so many years, this technology is still in the stage of clinical trials. It reminds me of the challenges faced by researchers, who could spend year after year researching on a particular treatment, before it can be widely adopted, not to mention the possibility of not passing the trials at all.

My presentation was on the topic of the epidemiological association of age-related macular degeneration with cognitive function or dementia. Age-related macular degeneration is a degenerative disease of the retinal pigment epithelium. This is the cell layer within the retina that is responsible for maintaining the function of the light receptors of the eyes.

I enjoyed the experience a lot. Joining this conference has allowed me to improve my confidence and presentation skills. I also had a great time in Shantou as I visited local stores and compared the city with Hong Kong.
