Residents' Association Activities

Area 39 Sing Off!

The annual singing contest organized by the Residents' Association is named 'Area 39 Sing Off!' this year.

A preliminary round was held on 15 March 2016, with Prof Kenneth Young, College Master, as the judge. A total of 18 contestants across all years advanced to the final round held on 24 March 2016.

Mr Keith Chung, an experienced performer, was invited to be the judge and to perform on the day of the final round. Many residents cheered for their friends and waved florescent sticks along with the rhythm. The audience applauded the many high quality performances and songs in different languages.

Victoria Chan (second year) won the champion in the solos with a song by Taiwanese singer A-Lin (Chinese name of song: 我很忙). The first and second runners-up were first-year students Clara Tang, who performed Ghost and Hold me down with the ukulele, and Lauren Chan, who performed Radioactive.

For the group contest, the winner was Chan Hei Chi (vocal), Cha Min Ji (vocal) and Bae Won Bin (guitar), performing Remedy. Hei Chi and Min Ji have partnered for years and have won many prizes and gained wide applause with their enchanting voices.

The first runner-up was the group Newton Yan, Joshua Siu, Jacky Yu and Derek Wong, and the second runner-up was the duet pair Ariel Sung and Sandy Wang.

Leather Handicraft Classes

Two leather handicraft classes were held on 19 January and 3 February 2016 respectively. About 20 participants were taught how to make personalised leather cardholders.  They took home their own works in satisfaction.

Hong Kong Excursion Series

Local, non-local and incoming exchange students joined tours organized by the Residents' Association to Tai O and Cheung Chau on 23 January and 12 March 2016 respectively.

For many of them, it was their first visit to Tai O. They tasted local food in the seafood market and traditional Chinese desserts, and joined a pleasant boat trip along the stilt houses. Three exchange students, Patrick Iddison, Tiia Maeaettae and Adnan Omeragic, were impressed by the magnificent view and had a great time.

At Cheung Chau, local snacks such as big fish balls were a must-try. A visit to Cheung Po Tsai Cave and a walk along the Praya never fail to impress. The Bun Festival may sound too familiar to locals, but our non-local and exchange students enjoyed the story a lot.

Lunar New Year Celebration: Fai Chun & Food

A party was held on 4 February 2016 to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Nearly 40 residents enjoyed writing Fai Chun, making fish-like decoration with red packets, and tasting taro cake and turnip cake.

International students and incoming exchange students were thrilled to write Fai Chun for their first time, spawning a wave of creativity in their own languages.

CWChallenge: Basketball

A basketball competition was held on 26 January 2016 at the United College Gymnasium. Three teams of around 20 participants played friendly matches against each other.

CWChallenge: Esport

League of Legends (LOL) is currently one of the most popular multiplayer online games worldwide, and TalesRunner is a childhood memory for many. Two competitions of LOL and TalesRunner were held on 3 March and 8 March 2016 respectively.
