I·CARE NGO Internship Programme: Progress Updates

The I·CARE NGO Internship Programme collaborates with the non-governmental organisations (NGO) in Hong Kong, Mainland and Taiwan to offer internship opportunities to students.  It provides students with a better understanding of the services of the NGOs and enables them to reflect on their values and their connection with the communities from a wider perspective.  Participants of the Hong Kong programme are furthered to gain first-hand experience of interacting with different people of the local community so as to stimulate ideas in positive social changes; whereas participants of the Mainland and Taiwan programme will experience the culture and livelihood of the places, in addition to gaining knowledge of community work.

In this academic year, 17 students were selected to engage in a three-month local internship programme which started from October last year at the following NGOs:

1.Community Development Alliance
2.St. James' Settlement
3.Hong Kong Women Workers' Association
4.Hapi School
5.V-artivist
6.Translate for Her
7.Concern for Grassroots' Livelihood Alliance

For the Mainland and Taiwan programme, 24 selected students who set off in late May of this year to work for the following NGOs are expected to complete their internship next month:

1.Yunnan Heart to Heart Community Care
2.Wuding Sincere Heart Social Work Centre
3.Beichuan Big Fish Public Welfare Development Centre
4.Rural Women Development Foundation
5.PFLAG China
6.Pei-Tou Culture Foundation
7.Chi-Mei Community University, Kaohsiung
8.Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association
9.Ludi Community College

To equip participants with the concept and skills of community work, this programme organises training activities among which three seminars were held on the 23rd and 24th of May in this year. These seminars were also made available to interested parties of the public so as to promote knowledge sharing.  Topics are as follows:

1.The Mobilisation and Strategies in Policy Advocacy (Speaker: Athena Wong, veteran
community worker)
2.Customisation and Companionship in Community Work (Speaker: Dora Cheng, veteran
community worker)
3.Social Intervention, Connection and Co-creation of Parent-Child Reading Club (Speaker:
Kenny Or, founder of the community organisation Little Green Feet)
