Nike X Yoga
What kind of sports can increase our flexibility, strengthen our muscles, concentrate our thoughts, and relax and calm us? It is yoga that can do all these and more!
To encourage our College students to learn about the benefits of yoga and snatch a little leisure from their busy lives, a yoga trial session was organised on 12 November 2018 by Mr Franklin AU, Resident Tutor, who invited a professional yoga coach from Nike Training Club to be the instructor.
As the session was for beginners, the coach introduced the participants to the fundamental principles of alignment and breathwork in flow of postures linked together by breath. The participants learnt basic yoga postures through step-by-step posture demonstrations and one-on-one guidance by the coach. Emphasis was placed on the participants' understanding, safety, and stability within each pose. Gradually the participants' individual poses could be linked together to form a gentle flowing sequence of movements.
The session was not just an occasion for students to have exercise; it was also a great opportunity for students from different origins and floors of the College hostel to mingle with one another and with the Resident Tutors.
Hong Kong Heritage Tour: Tai Kwun and Old Chinese Tea House
A Hong Kong heritage tour was organised on 18 November 2018 by Mr Toby LAU, Resident Tutor, for our College students to visit Tai Kwun, a new centre for heritage and arts in Central, and an old Chinese tea house on Hong Kong Island.
The students enjoyed the self-guided tour in Tai Kwun a lot and took many pictures in the exhibition halls and courtyard. They also found the trip rewarding as they had a chance to explore the former Central Police Station compound and learn about how those heritage buildings have been vitalised as an arts and cultural hub.
After the visit to Tai Kwun, the participants hopped on a tram for the second part of the heritage tour: lunch in Lin Heung Kui (an old Chinese tea house). Since most of the participants were non-local students, they were very interested in having Hong Kong-style dim sums and Chinese stir-fried dishes. Some students even claimed that it was their first time to visit an old Chinese Tea House and have dim sums. A wide variety of dim sums were ordered, from shrimp dumplings and siumaai to marinated pork stomach and turnip cakes. They hoped to have similar activities in the coming term to explore different sides of Hong Kong and enjoy Hong Kong-style delicacies.
Vice-Chancellor's Visit to the College
To receive updates on the College's latest developments, Prof Rocky S TUAN, Vice-Chancellor/ President of CUHK, arranged a visit to the College on 30 November 2018. The programme comprised three main parts.
In the meeting with our College Fellows and Affiliates, Prof TUAN got to know about the duties of the College Committees and gained a deeper understanding about the operation of a small college, through exchanges with Prof Wai-Yee CHAN, College Master, and seven College Fellows, who were also Chairpersons of the Committees.
The meeting was followed by a College campus tour, when Prof TUAN dropped into the classrooms where students were having their College General Education classes, and paid a visit to the College hostel rooms and facilities.
After the tour, Prof TUAN met with 16 College students, some of whom were members of the Representative Council of the College Student Union and Student Honour Code Committee. The students took the opportunity to bring out College issues they were concerned about, such as transportation and security, and had casual chats with Prof TUAN. The meeting was rounded off with a delicate and delectable afternoon tea.
Staff Appreciation Day
To promote an atmosphere of appreciation and gratitude at the workplace, 14 December 2018 was designated as as the annual Staff Appreciation Day at CUHK.
On that day, as a token of appreciation to the College staff for their efforts and contribution to the College, Prof WONG Suk Ying, Warden of the College Hostel, sponsored a tea party at the College Office. Staff members were treated to desserts and drinks.
The College staff, who could snatch a little leisure in that afternoon, were grateful for Prof WONG's heart-warming and cheering deed.
