Witnessing the growth and achievements of their students over the years is the common wish of many teachers. On 4 April 2014, many scholarship donors attended the College Scholarship Presentation Ceremony to meet the scholarship recipients. Apart from the donors, some of the scholarship winners' parents, principals and teachers of their alma maters also joined the event to celebrate. With no exception, they were proud of the scholarship recipients. The atmosphere at the ceremony was full of warmth and joy.
The College offered a total of 19 Admission Scholarships, 7 Scholarships for Academic Excellence, 3 Scholarships for Physics Students, and 1 Scholarship for Outstanding Performance in General Education in the academic year 2013–14. These scholarships were awarded in recognition of the recipients' outstanding academic performance as well as their achievements in non-academic areas. The College also awarded a number of Exchange Scholarships and Scholarships for Service Learning Trips, in the hope of encouraging students to participate in the relevant trips and exchange programmes. Admitted to the College with outstanding results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, Miss Wu Weijing, a Year 1 student of the Faculty of Science, was awarded one of the College Admission Scholarships – The Yen Scholarship this year. The Principal of Wu's alma mater, San Wui Commercial Secondary School, Mr Wong Tong Pak, was invited to the ceremony to share the joy with Wu. At the ceremony, Mr Wong, a CUHK graduate who majored in Physics, met two of his former teachers: Dr Leung Wing Pun, a donor of the College Scholarship for Physics Students, and Prof Kenneth Young, the College Master. They had a cordial exchange on nurturing the next generation. It was a pleasant surprise for all three of them. Miss Carissa Ma, a College student majoring in English, obtained a Scholarship for Academic Excellence and a Scholarship for Outstanding Performance in General Education offered by the College this year. She not only performed well in her studies, but also actively participated in College activities. She was grateful for all the opportunities that the College has offered to students to learn and to grow. As the Vice-President of the Service Team last year, she learnt about the importance of teamwork, empathy, and tolerance. She came to understand that society had been giving many disadvantaged young people unfair labels, which they had to struggle to overcome and shake off. Meanwhile, she said that words of kindness and encouragement could be powerful forces to help ease this process. And this year, while organizing taster sessions for the Toastmasters, she saw fellow students becoming more confident in public speaking. She was more determined than ever to devote more of her time to helping others in gaining confidence. On behalf of her fellow scholarship recipients, Carissa delivered a vote of thanks to the scholarship donors, 'For us, this scholarship is an important recognition for our past efforts as well as a huge encouragement for us to pursue our dreams. It allows all of us to have more faith in ourselves, and encourages all of us to be more involved in life. The generous support of our donors not only gives us financial assistance with our education, but also brings us one step closer to achieving our career goals, so that in the future, we may have the ability to help other students the way the scholarship has helped us.'
