Social English Workshop

To bolster students' self-confidence when using English on different types of social occasions, the College organized three sessions of Social English Workshop in April 2014.  This interesting and inspiring workshop was faciliated by Mr Brian MacLean, a native English speaker who has spent many years in Hong Kong as a teacher, and as a trainer at all levels of some of Hong Kong's largest employers.  Mr MacLean drew an analogy between social communications and table tennis, both of which are played in a back and forth manner.  He instructed participating students in making communications more interactive. In the second and third sessions, some hostel residents from other colleges joined the workshop with CWC students.  After each session, the host and participants enjoyed port and cheese together, and the facilitator also introduced to the participants the relevant 'globalised' etiquette.

CW Chu Toastmasters

Rumour has it that good things come in threes, in Latin: 'omne trium perfectum'. Each semester, the CW Chu Toastmasters organizes taster sessions in threes. Never mind the Three Little Pigs, or the Three Musketeers, the Three Toastmasters Taster Sessions are now the way to go. If you wish to improve your public speaking skills, gain more confidence, and most importantly, have fun, CW Chu Toastmasters is at your service!

In the academic year 2013–14, we organized three super fun and rewarding sessions, on 14 January, 12 February and 6 March 2014. In each session, we encouraged students to speak on a specific theme, and to provide each other with constructive comments. We also invited guest speakers from other Toastmasters Clubs to give mini workshops about public speaking.

On 14 January, Mr PC Chan from Kowloon Toastmasters Club demonstrated to us various incredibly effective ways of using body language in speech presentation. On 12 February, Mr Daniel Wong from Dynamic Toastmasters Club taught us how to better organize speeches. On 6 March, Mr Alex Mok from Kowloon Toastmasters Club gave an engaging and inspiring workshop titled 'How to control your fear of public speaking'. He shared with us the strategy of '2S': So what, and Showtime! There is no 'perfect' speaker, only a speaker who is passionate, determined, and eager to show everything he or she has to offer.
