MAJOR PAST EVENTS

2010 Academic Symposium on Developmental Studies in Health and Diseases

Co-organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Medical Department and Division of Life Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and jointly coordinated by the Office of Academic Links (China) and the School of Biomedical Sciences, the 2010 Academic Symposium on Developmental Studies in Health and Diseases was successfully held on 19 and 20 October 2010.

School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2010

The first Postgraduate Research Day 2010 of our School was held on 29 Oct 2010 (Friday). The entire event was organized by the following Organizing Committee formed entirely by our student members:

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building ( 羅桂祥綜合生物醫學大樓奠基典禮 )

To express our deepest appreciation to the K.S. Lo Foundation ( 羅桂祥基金 ) (the Foundation) for its exceptionally generous donation of HK$150 million in support of the development of biomedical sciences research at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the new research block which will house our School has been named Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building. This building is under construction at Area 39, Northside Research Campus and is estimated to be completed for our relocation between the end of 2011 and spring of 2012. The Building is named after the late Dr. Kwee-Seong Lo, Founder of the Vitasoy Group and the Foundation. The University held the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony on 1 September 2010 to commemorate the philanthropy of the Foundation.

SBS Christmas Party 2010

The SBS Christmas Party 2010 was successfully held on 14 December 2010 at the University Guest House, with an attendance of more than 200 teaching and non-teaching staff members, postgraduate students and invited guests, including the Pro-Vice Chancellors Prof. Jack Cheng and Prof. Henry Wong; Prof. Dennis Lo, Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine; Prof. H. K. Ng, Associate Dean (Education), Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Vincent Lee, Director, School of Pharmacy; Ms. Janet Chow, Director of Institutional Advancement; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).

IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine 2010

Co-organized by the School of Biomedical Sciences and Hong Kong Bioinformatics Centre of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine 2010 was successfully held between 18 and 21 December 2010 at the Teaching Building at Chak Cheung Street (now named as Cheng Yu Tung Building), The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  The Opening Ceremony on 19 December 2010 was officiated by Prof. Henry Nai-Ching Wong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK.  Prof. Stephen Kwok-Wing Tsui of the School of Biomedical Sciences was the Chair of this conference.

Seminar on "Intellectual Property (IP) Protection and Commercialization of Research Outputs"
A one-day seminar on "Intellectual Property (IP) Protection and Commercialization of Research Outputs" was co-organized by the Knowledge Transfer Unit (KTU) and School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) on 9 August 2010 at Room 202AB, Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building, CUHK. A total of 50 staff and students joined the event.
Publication of SBS Annual Report 2009-2010

Our SBS Annual Report 2009-2010 was published in September 2010. The public can understand our School from a wider perspective through the achievements on different domains (including research, education, academic and community links, etc) featured in this Annual Report.

Basic Core Lab Learning Series
Six talks under the "Basic Core Laboratories Learning Series" were organized by the Core Laboratories Team on every Thursday between 7 October and 11 November 2010.
Formation of Provisional Student Representative Council
Our Graduate Division of Biomedical Sciences has established a "Provisional Student Representative Council" in August 2010. The Council aims at exploring the possibility of establishing a SBS Student Union/Association to facilitate students' adjustment to the University life, cater for their different needs in the study life (especially for those who are from overseas and the Mainland), foster peer group support, and ensure their voice be heard by various authorities.
AWARDS & HONOURS

Prof. CHENG Hon-Kei Christopher appointed as the Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology Ltd.
Prof. CHENG Hon-Kei Christopher has recently been appointed as the Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology Ltd. effective from 1 January 2011. 
Prof. YUNG Wing-Ho elected as the Secretary of the Federation of Asian-Oceanian Neuroscience Societies (FAONS)
Prof. YUNG Wing-Ho was elected at the last Congress of the Federation of Asian-Oceanian Neuroscience Societies (FAONS) held in Lucknow, India in November 2010 as the Secretary of the FAONS for the term 2011-2012.
Dr. HWANG Shui-Shan Isabel won a Commendation Prize in the Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO 2010
Dr. HWANG Shui-Shan Isabel was awarded a Commendation Prize for her presentation on "Key physiology concepts through animations used by about 600 CUHK students" delivered at the Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO 2010 which was organized by the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research (CLEAR) and the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) on 22 Oct 2010.
Awards obtained by our Postgraduate Students
Miss GU Shen, Year 2 MPhil student under supervision of Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, won the Association of Chinese Geneticists in America (ACGA) Graduate Student Research Poster Award for her poster presentation on "Identification of the regulatory networks of miR-199a-2 in testicular germ cell tumors" given at the 60th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics held in early November 2010.
ACADEMIC LINKS

Visit of Academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineeing (CAE)
On 16 December 2010, seven members of the delegation from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) including Prof. (and Mrs.) Sheng-Li Yang, Prof. (and Mrs.) Yong-Su Zhen and Prof. Hong-Yang Wang, Academicians, Division of Health Engineering, CAE; Mr. Wei Chen, Director of Office of CAE (Shenzhen) Activity Base; Ms. Hai-Yan Xu, Bureau of the International Cooperation of CAE, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences. The visitors met with representatives from our School including Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director; Prof. Woody Chan, Associate Director (Graduate Education); Prof. Ge Lin; Prof. Franky Chan; Prof. Christopher Cheng; Prof. Gang Li; Prof. Kenneth Lee; Prof. Wing-Ho Yung and Prof. Ya Ke.  At the meeting, the visitors were briefed on the latest development of our School. They also actively discussed possible areas for future collaboration.
2010 MOE Key CUHK-Jinan University Joint Laboratories for Regenerative Medicine Conference
The "2010 Ministry of Education (MOE) Key CUHK-Jinan University Joint Laboratories for Regenerative Medicine Conference" was held on 14 December 2010 at Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Visit of Robert Gordon University (UK)
Representatives from Robert Gordon University (United Kingdom), including Prof. Cherry L. Wainwright, Director, Institute for Health and Welfare Research, and Dr. Rachel Knott, Senior Lecturer, School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, paid a visit to the School of Biomedical Sciences on 23 November 2010.
Follow-up Visit of Academic Scholars nominated by the NSFC
Following the 2010 Academic Symposium on Developmental Studies in Health and Diseases, Prof. Yan Shen (沈岩院士), Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Academician, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Xue Zhang (張學教授), Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences) and 10 other scholars from the mainland paid a follow-up visit to the School of Biomedical Sciences on 21 October 2010 to have a round-table meeting with our School members. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, CUHK. During the meeting, our School members discussed actively with the mainland guests on the possible areas for research collaboration and academic exchange. The meeting was rounded up by a farewell lunch hosted by Prof. Jack Cheng.
Meetings with Representatives from U.K. Universities
Through the coordination of the Office of Academic Links (OAL), representatives of SBS had met with a couple of delegations from universities of the UK. 
Delegation Visit of Xinjiang Medical University
A delegation from Xinjiang Medical University, China comprising Prof. Fan Li (李凡), Vice President of Xinjiang Medical University, and Prof. Xin-Min Mao (毛新民), Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 14 October 2010.
Wuhan Delegation's Visit
A delegation from Wuhan, led by Prof. Yaobin Jia, Member of Standing Committee of Wuhan Municipal Party Committee, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 9 September 2010. The delegation comprised representatives from Wuhan Overseas Friendship Association and scientists from Wuhan University.
Delegation Visit to Jinan University
Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, led a delegation to visit Jinan University on 8 September 2010. The delegation composed of Professors Gang Li, Kenneth Lee, Kingston Mak, Chao Wan, Yin Xia and Ms. Samantha Wong of the Office of Academic Links (China).
Eighth International Symposium on Frontiers in Life Sciences – New Advances and Challenges in Multidisciplinary Research
On 26 August 2010, Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, SBS Director, was invited to attend on behalf of CUHK and to deliver a keynote speech on "Epigenetic regulation in germ cell tumorigenesis" at the Eighth International Symposium on Frontiers in Life Sciences – New Advances and Challenges in Multidisciplinary Research (生命科學前沿國際研討會 2010 – 多學科交叉研究的新進展與挑戰).
The 2nd China-US Forum on Frontiers of Cancer Research: Cancer Prevention & Therapy
Our School was invited to take part in the 2nd China-US Forum on Frontiers of Cancer Research: Cancer Prevention & Therapy (第二屆中美雙邊國際研討會:癌症預防與治療) which was co-organized by the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH), Chinese Academic of Science (CAS) and the University of Minnesota, U.S.A. between 15 and 17 August 2010 in Guangzhou, China.
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Biodiversity and Disease Animal Model Academic Conference

The Kunming Institute of Zoology, CAS, with co-organization of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Lijiang Municipal People's Government, organized the CAS Biodiversity and Disease Animal Model Academic Conference (中國科學院生物資源多樣性與疾病動物模型學術研討會) between 24 and 26 July 2010 in Lijiang, Kunming. Over 50 scientists and experts from Kunming Institute of Zoology, CAS, CUHK, Tongji University, University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan Institute of Virology, CAS, Anhui University, Kunming Medical University and Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine joined this conference.

Visit of Vice-President of Shantou University
Prof. Jiang Gu, Vice-President of Shantou University and Dean, School of Medicine and Prof. Tinhua Huang, Professor and Director, Research Center for Reproductive Medicine, School of Medicine, Shantou University visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) on 16 July 2010.
OUTREACH TO COMMUNITY

Biomedical Sciences Series aired on RTHK Radio 1 via《精靈一點》
Professors from our School were invited by RTHK Radio 1 to attend its live radio program 《精靈一點》(Biomedical Sciences Series). The Series, featuring "Biomedical Sciences", consisted of 7 episodes. The episodes were broadcasted on RTHK Radio 1 every Monday at 1 pm between 7 June and 19 July 2010.
"Biomedical Research" Series published on Yahoo!Health
Professors from our School were invited by Yahoo!HongKong to contribute featured articles on different topics related to biomedical research and public health for access by the lay public. The Column, named "New Medical Knowledge – Biomedical Sciences (醫學新知 — 生物醫學)", was launched in the last quarter of 2010 on Yahoo!Health. Each featured article was written by different Professors from our School included Prof. Y. W. Kwan; Prof. C. H. Cho; Prof. Christopher Cheng; Prof. Mary Waye; Prof. Ge Lin; Prof. P. S.
