The second Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Scholars Visit Programme was held in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 9 to 12 April 2013. Three prominent CASS scholars visited the University this year, comprising Prof. Li Yang, Vice President and Division Member of CASS; Prof. Shen Jiaxuan, Former Director of Institute of Linguistics and Division Member of CASS, and Prof. Wan Ming, Researcher of Institute of History, CASS. CUHK and CASS took the opportunity to sign an agreement to strengthen collaboration between the two parties.
The scholars were warmly received by CUHK senior officers including Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Gordon Cheung, Associate Prof-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Leung Yuen Sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts; and Prof. Paul Lee, Dean of Faculty of Social Science. The delegation also met with representatives from History, T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre, Institute of Global Economics and Finance, and Economics and visited related research centers and units, to exchange ideas on relevant research projects and explore possibilities for collaboration.
On 10 April, the three scholars delivered public lectures at the Lecture Series by CASS Scholars. Prof. Li Yang gave an overview of the economic developments in China after the 18th CPC Congress. Prof. Shen Jiaxuan delivered a lecture on "Chinese as a Noun Language"; and Prof. Wan Ming made a presentation on her research relating to silver currency in Ming Dynasty. About two hundred people including scholars and students from CUHK and other universities as well as from the general public were attracted to the lectures.
During the visit, Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Prof. Li Yang, Vice President of CASS signed an academic exchange agreement, paving the way to promote research collaboration and enhance academic linkage between CUHK and CASS.
