The current academic year promises to be exciting. The new undergraduate programme Computational Data Science (CDAS) admitted its first cohort of students. CDAS is an interdisciplinary programme introduced by the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computer Science with the aims of enabling students to develop cutting-edge massive data analytics and management solutions that are of practical interest to academics, industry, and society.

There were several personnel changes last year. Please join me in welcoming our new faculty members Prof. Wang Junhui, Dr Liu Kin Yat, and Dr Leung Sze Him. I am delighted that they have joined our team. You will find more details about our new faculty members in a subsequent section of this newsletter. I am also pleased to inform you about the promotions of our faculty members. Prof. Yau Chun Yip and Prof. Fang Xiao have been promoted to Professor and Associate Professor, respectively, with effect from August 2022. We send our hearty congratulations to Prof. Yau and Prof. Fang. Prof. Chan Ngai Hang retired in October 2022. Dr Philip Lee and Dr Han Ruijian left the University in July and September 2022, respectively. On behalf of the Department, I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Prof. Chan, Dr Lee, and Dr Han for their sterling contributions to the Department’s development over the years.

To enhance the teaching and learning environment, the computer laboratories of the Department underwent a major renovation in the summer of 2022 and are now equipped with interactive whiteboards. The Department is committed to supporting our students to achieve their best by enhancing teaching facilities and enriching their learning experience.
