LEUNG, Ka Yi
BSc in Statistics
Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico

I participated in an overseas exchange programme organised by the Office of Academic Links (OAL). I chose Mexico as my exchange destination and studied at Tecnologico de Monterrey for one semester. I wanted to go to Mexico because I did not know people who had gone to Latin America previously. I therefore wanted to explore Latin America and share my experience with my friends upon my return to Hong Kong. It was a great experience that I enjoyed immensely.

During my exchange lasting a period of 5 months, I enrolled in courses that related to my major, such as statistics and mathematics courses, and also in courses that I had a general interest in, such as economics and accounting courses. The exchange thus allowed me to study courses that I may not have had time to study in Hong Kong, enabling me to learn more in areas outside my major field of study. I consider that a broader range of knowledge will benefit my future development.

I had the chance to travel to countries outside Mexico, such as the United States, Colombia and Ecuador, and Mexican cities outside Monterrey. This extensive travel taught me much about the world. My horizons have been broadened by talking with different people, trying different foods and learning about different cultures. I also tried many activities that I have not tried before, such as scuba diving and hiking on a volcano. My travels provided both opportunities to learn and opportunities to relax after studying for a period.

I learned a new language during my stay in Mexico. Before going to Mexico, I could not speak Spanish, and it was difficult at first because I needed to use a Google translation or body language to communicate with other people. However, I took a Spanish course in Mexico and worked hard to learn Spanish over a period of a few months. I can now speak some Spanish, such as when greeting others and ordering food. I consider that learning languages is important as it enables more effective communication, and I would like to continue to learn Spanish in the future. I hope that I can one day communicate fluently with Spanish speakers.

The University of Texas at Austin, United States

I would like to express my gratitude for the financial grant provided towards funding my trip to Austin. In this report, I will provide an overview of my experience with the exchange programme, highlighting the valuable knowledge, perspectives and personal growth that I have gained during my time at the University of Texas at Austin (UT).

Academic Experience:

During the exchange programme, I enrolled in four courses at UT that are directly relevant to my major, namely Introduction to Risk Management, Financial Risk Management, Optimization Methods in Finance and International Finance. Through this academic pursuit, I have deepened my understanding of the finance industry by examining real-world examples within one of the world’s largest financial markets. My studies at UT have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of how the financial market operates and have provided valuable insights into my future career prospects.

Cultural Exposure:

One of the most impactful aspects of the exchange programme was the exposure to different cultures and the subsequent broadening of my horizons. The stark cultural differences between countries, and even those between different states of the United States, have been instrumental to my personal growth. Throughout the programme, I had the opportunity to compare and contrast the cultural nuances between Hong Kong and the United States. Notably, I discovered that the United States places a higher value on individual rights and respect for all, irrespective of gender, race, or ethnicity. This stark contrast to Hong Kong has provided me with a valuable perspective on cultural diversity.

Additionally, the exchange programme facilitated interactions with students from various backgrounds, allowing me to forge new friendships and gain insights into their cultures. Engaging in conversations with my peers exposed me to different perspectives and enabled me to become a better listener and communicator. Furthermore, I realised that even within the same country, different states have distinct cultures. For instance, the fast-paced lifestyle in New York differs significantly from the more relaxed pace in Austin. Through these experiences, my vision has been broadened, and I have developed the ability to appreciate and respond to diverse opinions.

In conclusion, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the financial grant. The experience has been transformational, allowing me to acquire valuable academic knowledge, expand my cultural understanding and develop crucial interpersonal skills. The support received has played a pivotal role in facilitating unforgettable experiences, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunities that I have been given.

TSE, Chun Hei
BSc in Risk Management Science
University of Toronto, Canada

During the winter term, I had an incredible opportunity to participate in an exchange programme at the University of Toronto (U of T). As part of this enriching experience, I enrolled in a selection of stimulating courses that expanded my knowledge and skills. The courses I took included Introduction to Machine Learning, where I gained a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and algorithms used in this exciting field. In this course, I collaborated with classmates from diverse ethnic backgrounds on a project about building neural networks. This experience not only enhanced our problem-solving skills but also taught us the importance of cultural diversity in our academic pursuits. Through mutual respect and shared knowledge, we developed a deeper understanding of collaboration and teamwork. It was an invaluable opportunity to learn from each other and broaden our horizons.

Additionally, I took Statistical Computation, which equipped me with valuable tools for data analytics. One challenge that I encountered in this course was adapting to a discussion-based lecture. This teaching style, which required pre-reading before each class to actively participate in discussions, was different from what I was accustomed to at CUHK. To overcome this challenge, I developed a disciplined routine of pre-reading and invested my time and effort to understand the mathematics literature before each lecture. I actively engaged in discussions, sought clarification from the professor, and collaborated with my classmates. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability, time management, and active learning. It also reinforced the value of critical thinking, effective communication, and independent learning. Ultimately, this challenge strengthened my resilience and expanded my academic horizons, preparing me for future challenges.

Beyond academics, I actively engaged in campus life by joining the D2 Soccer team at Trinity College. This allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant sports culture at U of T and participate in the U of T Intramural League. Being part of the soccer team not only honed my athletic abilities but also fostered teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. It was an exceptional opportunity to connect with my fellow students and build lasting friendships.

For prospective applicants seeking an exchange programme, I encourage embracing language challenges with confidence and seizing every opportunity for growth and connection. Through my personal experience, I discovered that Canadians greatly admire non-native English speakers who can communicate fluently, such as those from Hong Kong. They appreciate the effort put into mastering a second language and do not judge your English abilities on the same scale as native speakers. Remember, confidence is key. Embrace the chance to improve your language skills, engage with others, and make the most of your exchange programme with a positive and self-assured mindset.
