Madam CHONG started selling her homemade dumplings at Wan Chai Ferry Pier in the 1970s. Against all odds, her business not only survived but prospered. With her creativity, perseverance and customer-oriented attitude, she established her own food brand, Wanchai Ferry, and successfully turned a local enterprise into a global brand. She was therefore dubbed by the local media as the 'Dumpling Queen'.
Along her entrepreneurial journey, Madam CHONG had on numerous occasions given back to society. In 2018, she, with her daughter Ms Joanne WONG, set up a scholarship fund at the College to encourage our students to pursue the College vision, and to gain academic and personal benefits from their exchange and outreach experiences.
In appreciation of Madam CHONG's enormous and unfailing support for the College, the Multi-purpose Hall of the College was named after her. One of the few public events Madam CHONG attended recently was the naming ceremony of the Chong Kin Wo Hall in April 2018, as an officiating guest.
Madam CHONG's story of perseverance and success is an encouragement and inspiration to those who face adversities in life. Her sincere smiles and outstanding qualities will always be remembered.
Special Memorial Communal Dinner
Proposed by students and affiliates of the College, who have great respect for Madam CHONG, a solemn memorial ceremony was arranged during the communal dinner on 20 February 2019 at the Chong Kin Wo Hall. It began with an address of remembrance by Prof Wai-Yee CHAN, College Master, followed by a one-minute silence and a short slide show narrating Madam CHONG's story of establishing the Wanchai Ferry brand. The famous dumplings were also served at each table.
