The Arts of I Ching Divination
I Ching, or the Classic of Changes, is one of the oldest Chinese classics, and also the gateway to understanding the systems of cosmology and philosophy in ancient China. Mr Parker CHAN, Resident Tutor and Research Assistant from the D.C. Lau Research Centre for Chinese Ancient Texts), hosted a workshop, 'The Arts of I Ching Divination', on 22 March 2019 to unveil some of the mysteries of the classic.
Parker introduced participants to the most ancient method, yarrow-stalk method, to do divination through I Ching. Students had a lot of fun doing divination by skewers on their own and generating interesting results. They got to have a glimpse on the significance of the classic and the interpretation of divination results.
Exploring Central and Western Heritage Trail
To provide students with an opportunity to explore some historic buildings and sites on Hong Kong Island and appreciate their historical significance, Miss Caroline HUI, Resident Tutor, organised on 23 March 2019 a tour to the Central Route of the Central and Western Heritage Trail. Guided by a docent from The Antiquities and Monuments Office and accompanied by Caroline and another Resident Tutors, the students visited Statue Square, The Cenotaph, Old Supreme Court Building (Court of Final Appeal), the Former French Mission Building, St John's Cathedral and Flagstaff House (currently the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware) along the Central Route. The kind and friendly docent provided a very informative account of the history of the monuments. The students gained understanding of how Central, a historically significant area in Hong Kong, has grown and developed over the years.
After the tour, the participants hopped on a tram to Lin Heung Kui for a yum cha lunch. Since all of the students are non-local students, they were delighted to try Hong Kong-style dim sums in such an old Chinese tea house.
Floor Gathering
A Floor Gathering was held by Mr Eric MAN, Resident Tutor, on 15 April 2019 for residents to update one another on life in the College. Residents from different floors, in different majors and from different cultural backgrounds gathered for relaxing chats. A variety of topics were covered, from their tight final exam schedules to social and cultural issues in Hong Kong. During the gathering, sweet soup, stewed snow pear with snow fungus and red dates, and some fruit were served. International students were introduced to the sweet soup and dragon fruit which they first saw and tasted.
