First High Table Dinner: The Journey Home—after 40+ Years of Expedition to the US (Prof Rocky S TUAN)

Second High Table Dinner: Nanotechnology for Biomedical Microsystems (Prof Stella PANG)
This High Table Dinner was held in 8 November 2019, where the guest of honour was Prof Stella PANG, a Chu Scholar and currently Head of Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong.
Prof PANG shared some anecdotes about how a long time ago Dr CW Chu supported her and 47 other students to pursue undergraduate studies in the US. Dr CHU gave more than financial assistance. For example, he gave all the students a briefing before their departure to the US; he flew to Indiana to prepare the students for starting school; and from time to time he visited the students on campus to check their study progress and encourage them to focus on study. Prof PANG regarded Dr CHU a role model as he was caring, hardworking and a person who went after excellence.
Thanks to Dr CHU's selfless support, Prof PANG finished her undergraduate and graduate studies in Electrical Engineering in top universities in the US. She specialises in the areas of nanofabrication technology, nanoimprint, biomedical, microelectronic, optical, and microelectromechanical devices and microsystems. She is working as a member of a multidisciplinary team on the development of 3D biomimetic platforms and biosensors. The 3D platforms are artificial tissues of human organs, where we can test how different cells respond to different chemicals. Also, on these multi-layered platforms, the movement of different cells can be controlled. This technology can be applied to cancer treatments, which can filter out cancer cells in a tumour, so that they can be better targeted by medication/ treatments. The research on the platforms is also conducive to the development of nano-scale biosensors which can enter the body and discover useful medical information, helping scientists to construct 3D models of tumours to combat cancers. It is hoped that this can reduce the number of experiments on drug development using lab animals.
Dr PANG rounded off her sharing by encouraging students to aim high and let their imagination go wild, going as far as they can. She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Dr CHU who provided her with an invaluable opportunity to study in the US and expose herself to the fascinating fields of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering.
Another highlight of this High Table Dinner was the Inauguration Ceremony of the Fifth Executive Committee of the Residents' Association, Cosmos. Their term of office is from 1 November 2018 to 31 October 2019.
Third High Table Dinner: Let Our Social Brands FLY! —My Education and Social Service Journey (Dr Jeffrey HUI)
Dr Jeffrey HUI, Founding Chairperson of Phoenix Intellectuals Foundation, Founder and Principal of Dr Phoenix Global Education Group and Producer-in-Chief (Education) of Metro Broadcast Corporation, was the guest of honour at this High Table Dinner on 24 January 2019.
In his sharing, Dr HUI introduced the audience to another aspect he has been dedicated his life to apart from education—social innovation, which is the management of a corporate's resources in strategic ways to solve social problems such as pollution, poverty and inequality. On top of a job and career which are for our financial need and personal interests only, as what he has done, he urged the students to look for their calling—dreams or wishes that can sustain their lives and help them contribute to society.
Dr HUI guided the students to identify their real strengths by making reference to the four key drivers that make an individual's life great—passion, capacity, economic engine and social contribution, and be laser-focused on those throughout their lives. The students were encouraged to commit themselves to one of the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals with their real strengths to create a better world for our future.
Lastly, Dr HUI highlighted three social service projects he had initiated, including the Hong Kong Business Leaders Programme, the establishment of Phoenix Intellectual Foundation and 'The Dream Academy'. By sharing the successes of the projects and the benefits they have brought to our society, he called on the students to try to start their own social service projects in the next academic year.
