4th CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
|
The 4th CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine was successfully held at the Prince of Wales Hospital on 17-18 November 2014. The Symposium was jointly organized by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, CUHK; the Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, School of Biomedical Sciences, CUHK; the Sports Medicine And Regenerative Technology (SMART) Program, Lui Che Woo Institute of Innovative Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK; the Centre for Stem Cell and Regeneration, CUHK; and the MOE Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (CUHK-Jinan University).

Press Conference on the Unveiling of Genome of Dermatophagoides Farinae

A press conference on the unveiling of genome of Dernatophagoides (D.) farinae casting new light on diagnosis and interventions of inhalant allergies by CUHK research team was held on 16 December 2014.

Tang participated in the Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO 2014 (EXPO 2014) jointly organized by the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) and the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) on 15 December 2014.

AWARDS AND HONOURS
Prof. Alfred S.L. Cheng received the "Most Promising Young Researcher Award 2014" by the Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR
|
Prof. Alfred S.L. Cheng, Associate Professor of the School, has been awarded the "Most Promising Young Researcher Award 2014" by the Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR, for his research project "Elucidating gene regulatory networks of HBx isolated from novel HBV subgenotype/mutants associated with increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma".

Donation from the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries
|
The Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries (BMCPC) donated a sum of HKD1 million to support the "Silent Teacher – Body Donation Programme" and the ongoing enhancement of dissecting teaching in the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in November 2014. The donation presentation ceremony was held on 28 November 2014.

Following the previous visits by the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, Prof. Richard Oreffo, Chair of Musculoskeletal Science and Co-founder of the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells and Regeneration, Faculty of Medicine, Southampton University visited School of Biomedical Sciences from 14 to 17 September 2014.

Prof. Sun De-jun, President and Party Secretary, Prof. Zhao Gui-jun, Deputy Chair, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Mr. Gao Yi-bing, Director of Human Resources Management of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region People's Hospital, China visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 14 October 2014.

Dr. Ingrid Slade, Director of The Centre for Personalised Medicine and Dr. Gabriele De Luca, Associate Professor in Clinical Neurology, University of Oxford, United Kingdom visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 3 November 2014, after participating in the "Personalised Medicine Symposium: From Science to Clinical Decisions" jointly organized by the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Centre for Personalised Medicine, University of Oxford on the same day.

Led by Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, a delegation comprising Prof. Wan Chao, Prof. Zhao Hui, Prof. Albert H.H. Cheung as well as 16 postgraduate students and research staff participated in the Guangzhou-Hong Kong Postgraduate Technology Workshop and Postgraduate Research Symposium on Regenerative Medicine 2014 held on 16 and 17 December 2014.

With the joint efforts of the Organizing Committee of the SBS Postgraduate Research Day 2014 and the Graduate Education Office, the School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2014 was successfully held on 11th and 12th December 2014. This annual branding event has continued to serve as a platform for our postgraduate students to learn from their peers and supervisors for five years.

Organized by the SBS Postgraduate Student Association, the second SBS Director's Cup was held successfully on 11 October 2014.

Boat Trip Day
|
A boat trip to Sai Kung was organized by the SBS Postgraduate Student Association on 28 September 2014. Over 20 students joined the boat trip during which they had lots of fun under the nice weather.

Dr. Tsang Kit-man, Ph.D. Graduate (2010)
|
After obtaining her Ph.D. in Biochemistry (Medicine), Dr. Tsang Kit-man joined Dr. Cheng Lin-zhao's laboratory at Johns Hopkins University to study the differentiation mechanism of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells from pluripotent stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
