The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) , Nanjing University and Taiwan Central University, co-organised the "3rd Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Sciences" on 22 and 23 November at CUHK. The theme of this year is "City, Society, Culture – Innovation and Continuation of Tradition". Prof. Leo Lee Ou-fan, Professor of Humanities of CUHK, and 50 scholars in humanities and social sciences from the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan participated in the Forum to discuss topics on societies and cultures of the three places.
Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, Prof. Zhang Yibin, Vice-President of Nanjing University, and Prof. Chiang Wei-ling, President of Taiwan Central University officiated at the opening ceremony on 22 November. After the ceremony, Prof. Leo Lee presented a keynote speech, entitled "The Place of Humanities in Today's Global Cities", on the close relationship between city culture and architecture, especially in the 21st century. The forum was convened to link different scholars in humanities and social sciences for presentation and discussion. It served as a platform for prominent scholars in the regions to share views and discuss topics on "Regional Traditions and City Cultures", "Society for Sustainable Development", "Globalization: City Literature and Art", "Cultural Industry and Cultural Tourism", and "Comparison between Cities in Mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong". It aimed to promote cultural understanding and socio-cultural integration of the three places. The past two forums were held in Nanjing and Taiwan respectively. Scholars who participated in the past two forums published over 100 papers. The 4th Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Sciences will be held at Nanjing in 2009. |
