Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) led a 10-member delegation to Kunming from 4 to 5 June 2012 with a view to bolstering academic collaboration with partner institutions in Yunnan. During the visit, collaboration agreements were concluded with Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department, Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), CAS.

The delegation comprised Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. P.C. Leung, Director of Institute of Chinese Medicine and Director of State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China (CUHK); Prof. K. P. Fung, Director of Institute of Chinese Medicine and Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China (CUHK); Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of Biomedical Sciences; Prof. David Hui, Director, Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care; Prof. Yung Wing-ho of Biomedical Sciences; Prof. Nelson Tang, Department of Chemical Pathology and Associate Director of KIZ-CUHK Joint Laboratory of Bio-resources and Molecular Research of Common Diseases; Prof. Thomas Leung of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).

The delegation visited Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department, KIB and KIZ, and met with senior members and scientists of the organizations, including Mr. Long Jiang, Director-General of Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department; Prof. Yao Yonggang and Prof. Wang Wen, Deputy Directors of KIZ; Prof. Li Dezhu and Prof. Liu Ji Kai, Director and Depty Director of KIB; and Mr. Zhang Xinggen, Director of HK Macao Affairs Office of CAS. Representatives from both sides took the opportunity to receive updates on research developments and discuss plans for further collaboration.

During the visit, a renewal MOU was signed between CUHK and KIZ stating further direction and developments of the Joint Laboratory of Bio-resources and Molecular Research of Common Diseases. CUHK renewed the collaboration agreements on Joint laboratory on Phytochemistry of Medicinal Plants and Plant Resources, and on State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China with KIB. CUHK and Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Department also signed a MOU for Research Collaboration to forge long-term partnership between CUHK and the research organizations in Yunnan.

The visit consolidated existing collaborative efforts of CUHK with its partner organizations in Yunnan and enhanced ties to facilitate research and academic exchanges for future development.
