CUHK Receives Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards
Two scientific research projects led by researchers of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) 2016 from the Ministry of Education (MoE). The award presentation ceremony was held on 25 May on CUHK campus. Mr. ZHAO Lingshan, Deputy Director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs, MoE; Mr. Zhang Zongming, Deputy Inspector of the Education, Science and Technology Department, Liaison Office of The Central People's Government in the HKSAR; and Mr. LO Sai-hung, Brian, Deputy Secretary for Education, HKSAR Government, presented the prizes at the ceremony.
Prof. Wang Jianfang, Professor of the Department of Physics and Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Science, won the First-Class Award in Natural Sciences for his joint project of "Colloidal plasmonic nanocrystals: synthesis, properties and applications" in collaboration with research groups from Peking University and Beijing Computational Science Research Center. A Second-Class Award in Natural Sciences was presented to the project of "Identification of functional genes for crop improvement" led by Prof. Lam Hon-ming, Professor of the School of Life Sciences and Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology; and Prof. Samuel Sun, Director of the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology and Agricultural Biotechnology.
The Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) is set up by the MoE to recognize outstanding research projects at all tertiary institutions in mainland China. Since 2009, Hong Kong's tertiary institutions have been included in the scheme. The award is presented to individuals or units who have made remarkable contributions in the areas of scientific discovery, technological innovation, science and technology advancement and implementation of patented technologies. CUHK-SYSU State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China Holds Joint Summit
The State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China (Partner Laboratory in The Chinese University of Hong Kong) held a joint summit with its partner laboratory in Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) on 22 April in Hong Kong. A total of more than 50 participants from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and SYSU joined the summit, including principal investigators, clinicians, researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Prof. Cassian Yee from Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology, Division of Cancer Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was invited to deliver a keynote lecture titled "Adoptive T Cell Therapy: The Next Generation of ETC".
CUHK members participating in the summit include Prof. Dennis Lo, Prof. Anthony Chan and Prof. To Ka Fai, Associate Directors of the CUHK State Key Laboratory, as well as Prof. Tao Qian, Department of Oncology. Prof. Lo, together with Prof. Miles Qian, Deputy Director of SYSU Cancer Center, co-chaired the summit and gave opening remarks. Participating professors gave presentations to report on the latest research updates and progress while exchanging ideas on current porjects. Both sides discussed issues of common interest and explored the possibilities of initiating collaboration plans for relevant hot topics of research. The summit served as a valuable platform for both parties to enhance exchange and communication, paving the way for further collaboration.
Founded in 2006, the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China (Partner Laboratory in The Chinese University of Hong Kong) aspires to focus its effort on cancers which are especially threatening to the Guangdong population, such as nasopharyngeal and lung cancers, in partnership with SYSU. The laboratory is a scientific research centre at national level focusing especially in cancers of high prevalence in Asia, the only State Key Laboratory in Hong Kong for this important and prevalent disease, and also a sister institution of MD Anderson Cancer Center Global Academic Programs. The summit was first held in March 2009.
