Prof. Kenneth Young, Honorary Fellow and Emeritus Professor of Physics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), spoke at 'The Yangtze River Forum' at the Hubei Provincial Library on 27 May, kicking off the 'CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series'. The renowned theoretical physicist delivered a public lecture entitled 'The Big Bang', sharing his expertise by elaborating on the classical canon including the expansion of the universe and the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). He also discussed famous scientific theories such as that of Newton's laws, Hubble's law and general relativity. The lecture attracted an audience of nearly 500. Participating students actively sought advice from Prof. Young after the talk.
Prof. Kenneth Young joined CUHK in 1973. He has been Chairman of the Department of Physics, Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Graduate School, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and the Founding Master of C.W. Chu College, and has made significant contributions to CUHK. Prof. Young was also awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Award, and also elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1999. He was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship this year.
To further cement the presence of CUHK and strengthen its ties with the Greater China region, the Office of Academic Links (China) officially launched the 'CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series' in 2017. Every year, two to three distinguished scholars from CUHK will be invited to tour and give public lectures in various provinces and institutes in mainland China, with an aim to highlight CUHK's excellent research achievements and share research experience.
