CUHK Chemistry Professor Xie Zuowei Elected CAS Academician

 

Prof. Xie Zuowei, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been elected Academician of he Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in recognition of his remarkable contributions in the field of organic chemistry.  There are a total of 61 elected Academicians this year. With his great achievements in organometallic chemistry, Professor Xie received the honour.

 

Prof. Xie received his BSc degree from Hangzhou University; MSc degree from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and his PhD degree, working in a joint programme between Technische Universitӓt Berlin and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was then employed as a research associate in the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, and afterwards as post-doctoral fellow in the University of Southern California.   Prof. Xie joined CUHK in 1995 and was appointed as Professor of Chemistry in 2006.  In 2013, he was appointed as Choh-Ming Li Professor of Chemistry.

 

CAS Members are elected by all current CAS Members with voting rights. Researchers, professors or scholars of similar ranking or specialists of Chinese nationality with outstanding and innovative achievement in the scientific sector can be nominated and elected as a CAS Member. The election of Members is held bi-annually.  Currently there are 9 CAS Members in CUHK, including Prof. Henry Wong, Prof.  Chi Wu and Prof. Thomas Mak. Dr. ZHOU Jianping was Conferred Honorary Degree by CUHK

 

Dr. ZHOU Jianping, the Chief Designer of the China's Manned Space Programme, visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 30 November to participate in the 84th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees, receiving the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa conferred by the University.

 

Dr. ZHOU Jianping  has long been engaged in the teaching and research of aerospace technology as well as aerospace engineering management. He has participated in the design of China's spacecraft from Shenzhou 1 to Shenzhou 6 and overseen the strategic research and technique of the aerospace project and the implementation plan programming. As the chief designer, he led various parts of China's Manned Space Programme, including the Shenzhou 7 extravehicular activities, and the full technical work of the rendezvous and docking of Shenzhou 8 to 10 and Tiangong 1, and the technical work of Tiangong 2 space laboratory, Shenzhou 11 and Tianzhou 1 cargo spacecraft missions, making great contributions to achieving the leapfrog development of China's Manned Space Programme.

 

Dr. Zhou led a delegation of the Shenzhou 7 Manned Space Mission to visit CUHK in 2008. He delivered a talk to students and guests on the Shenzhou 7 project, which included information on the spacewalk technique, the latest developments in China's aerospace technology, his work experience in the aerospace industry and some personal reflections. In 2012, Dr. Zhou once again led another delegation to speak at CUHK and talked about the aerospace technology of the Shenzhou 9 project and the Chinese Space Station project. The University confers upon Dr. Zhou the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa in recognition of his achievement in the development of China's aerospace programme. Details can be found from the University's Press Release.
