【College Updates】Former Head Professor Henry N.C. Wong was appointed an Honorary Fellow of CUHK
|
Professor Henry N.C. Wong, Former College Head, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Research Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the University on 16 May. Our heartfelt congratulations!
In 1973, Prof. Wong received a Bachelor degree in Science with first class honours from CUHK and pursued higher education in the United Kingdom. He returned to CUHK and started teaching in the Department of Chemistry since 1983, and served as the Department Chairman between 1995 and 1997. He had held the positions of Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President of CUHK from 2009 to 2013, and the Dean of Science from 2012 to 2018. He contributed to the promotion of collaborations with non-local universities and research facilities, offering valuable learning opportunities for students to broaden their vision.

【College Updates】Dr. Sin Wai Kin and Dr. Cheung Hoi Chuen were Conferred Honorary Doctorates of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong

Dr. Sin Wai Kin (Left) and our alumnus Dr. Cheng Hoi Chuen (73/Economics, right) were conferred Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. Our heartfelt congratulations!
Dr. Sin Wai Kin, who is 93 years old, has long been a representative personage of Hong Kong’s commerce with businesses across jewellery, real estate, hospitality and banking industries. Besides his businesses, Dr. Sin has spent years promoting higher education in Hong Kong, especially in the field of Chinese culture and humanities. In 2013, Dr. Sin donated seven million Hong Kong dollars to the College and the “Dr. Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Fund” was founded for supporting Chinese culture activities on the campus.

Review the lectures:
The sixth “Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences”, co-organized by the New Asia College and the School of Life Sciences, aims at enabling the general public and students to better understand life sciences and to appreciate their essence, while promoting the values and appreciation of life sciences in modern society. A total of three lectures were held from 26 March to 6 April 2022, delivered by Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, SBS, JP, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology, CUHK and Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine, CUHK.

【Cultural Topics】Professor Leung Yuen Sang Chaired the 33rd Ch'ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture

Review the lectures:
The “Ch'ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture” is organized to enhance academic and cultural exchanges. Invited speakers in the past years are all distinguished scholars in different fields of Chinese culture. Since 2013, the lecture series has been endowed by the "Mr. Chan Chi-sun Chinese Culture Fund".
This year, the College was honoured to have invited Prof. Leung Yuen Sang who is currently Research Professor of History at CUHK as the speaker. Prof. Leung has taught at the National University of Singapore, the California State University and CUHK.

【Cultural Topics】Professor David Faure Chaired the Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History 2021/22

Review the lectures:
The "Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History 2021/22", delivered by Professor David Faure, Emeritus Professor of the Department of History, CUHK, were held on 4 and 9 April 2022.
Jointly organized by the Chung Chi College and the New Asia College, and co-organized by the Department of History since 2007, the Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History invites an internationally renowned scholar in history every year to conduct lectures. The lectures this year were sponsored by the Austin-Eminence Charitable Foundation and coorganized with Hong Kong Museum of History. All lectures were held online due to the pandemic.

【Cultural Topics】Dr. Edward Tse Chaired the New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China 2021/22
|
"New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China 2021/22" was held on 11 February this year. It was our honour to have invited Dr. Edward Tse, Founder and CEO of Gao Feng Advisory Company, as well as Adjunct Professor of the CUHK Business School, to share his comprehensive view on the topic “China’s Digital Innovations” as a pioneer of management consulting services in Mainland China. The lecture is sponsored by the "Dato' Wong Kwing-keung Fund".
Dr. Tse shared his insights on the development of innovation and technology in modern China and the reasons why China's digital technology has become the top in the world, with his over 20 years of experience in providing strategic management consulting services to renowned enterprises in the Mainland and overseas. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Terence Chong, Associate Professor of Economics and Executive Director of Lau Chor Tak Institute of Global Economics and Finance, CUHK.

Jointly organized by the College and the College Alumni Association, co-organized by New Asia Middle School, the Second Talk of the “New Asia College Cultural Talk” was held on 19 March 2022. Due to the pandemic, the talk was held online this time, with Professor Lai Chi Tim, Professor of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies of CUHK, Director of the Centre for Studies of Daoist Culture of CUHK and Executive Associate Director of Institute of Chinese Studies of CUHK, as the speaker.

The College organized a number of workshops entitled “Genuine Communication – Intensive Training on Presentation and Communication Skills” in November 2021 to enhance the presentation and communication skills of our students and alumni.
Generously supported by the Dr. Wong Kwai Lam Fund and conducted by professional trainer in communication and presentation skills Mr. James Bryce, the workshops aimed to help College students and alumni in conversing with others confidently during interviews, presentations and daily conversations, improving fundamental communication and presentation skills, and strengthening techniques in enhancing team dynamics.

Researchers from CUHK have won 17 awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2022, including four Gold Medals, ten Silver Medals and three Bronze Medals. 【Alumni Connections】Updates from Overseas College Alumni Associations
|
(1) New Asia College Alumni Association of Northern California
New Asia College Alumni Association of Northern California organized two activities in February and March, which are "Chinese New Year of the Tiger Online Gathering" on 26 February, and a tea gathering on 19 March.
Whether the meeting was online or in person, our alumni treasured the time of being together.
(2) The New Asia College Alumni Association of Ontario, CUHK
The New Asia College Alumni Association of Ontario, CUHK hosted an online sharing session on gardening on May 14 and more than 30 alumni attended.
This sharing session was a continuation of the one organized last year, which was very well received. Thus the association organized it again, for raising awareness of environmental protection, enhancing participants’ knowledge and spreading the joy of gardening during the pandemic. Several topics were covered in the session, which included plant selections, soil management, pest control and planting methods.
Vice-president Mr. Jimmy Ma hosted the meeting, with participants being alumni of CUHK and other friendly universities. It was a joyful and knowledgeable meeting which planters benefited a lot from the exchanges.

【Upcoming Events and Exhibitions】Exhibition of Ch’ien Mu Library
|
Chinese Art Classics on View: Featured Chinese Paintings and Calligraphies of the Ming Dynasty
Period: 16 May to 30 June 2022
Over the years, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library has acquired very finely reproduced artworks made by specialists including the Nigensha Publishing Co. Ltd. in Japan and kept in the New Asia College Ch’ien Mu Library. The Collection consists of calligraphy and paintings reproduced from the Tang to the Qing Dynasty. The originals of these artworks are housed in different museums such as National Palace Museum, Taipei, Shanghai Museum, and British Museum. The artwork reproduction requires a high standard of professional and specialized skills. This art works display showcases the featured Chinese paintings and Calligraphies of the Ming Dynasty. All are welcome during the Library’s opening hours.
