Science freshmen and teachers gathered on 3 September, 2018 for the Inauguration Ceremony for Undergraduate students admitted in 2018. Our Interim Dean, Professor Xie Zuowei, encouraged students to make good use of the opportunities available at the University to enrich their university life. He also reminded students to plan ahead, balance responsibilities and make room for themselves and their families.

Over 70 Faculty members joined the Research Day held on 11 June, 2018. Theme of this year was "Conversion of Research Results and Achievements into Commercially Available Products". We are honoured to have invited five speakers to share with us their invaluable experience in transforming innovative research into products, jobs and businesses. Professor Wang Jun, co-founder of a biotechnology company, shared his journey of becoming a businessman from an academic.

Near 900 S6 students attended the JUPAS Admission Interviews held on 8-9 May, 2018 at Esther Lee Building. Science Student Ambassadors shared their CUHK life and study tips with prospective students.We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all teachers and student ambassadors for their contribution in this two-day event.

Five Science students in three teams won two Second-Class Award in Entrepreneurship Category and a Merit Award in Innovation Category in the "Challenge Cup" National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final.

Congratulations to Science students, Lam Chun Yin of Department of Physics and Wong Chak Kui of Department of Chemistry, who were awarded Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award 2018. Both of them have been awarded with a scholarship of up to HK$150,000. More importantly, they are supported to attach to one or more of the elite programmes including Overseas/Mainland Attachment Programme, Mentorship Programme, Local Internship Programme and Service Project Programme.

Congratulations to Professor Yau Shing Tung, being the first Chinese mathematician who has been conferred the prestigious Marcel Grossmann Award in recognition of his achievements for the proof of the positivity of total mass in the theory of general relativity and perfecting as well as the concept of quasi-local mass, for his proof of the Calabi conjecture, and for his continuous inspiring role in the study of black holes physics. Professor Yau is one of the most celebrated and influential mathematicians in the world. He made fundamental contributions to differential geometry which have influenced a wide range of scientific disciplines, including astronomy and theoretical physics.

Congratulations to Professor Li Guang Feng Tjonnie of Department of Physics, who has received a Croucher Innovation Awards 2018 in the amount of HK$5 million to sponsor his research "Unveiling the Nature and Origin of Compact Objects".The award aims to offer substantial support to exceptionally talented scientists at formative stage, advance their expertise and contribute to development of education and research in Hong Kong. The ceremony presentation will be held in December 2018.

Professor Lau Kwok Fai of School of Life Sciences and his research team have found a new mechanism which stimulated a process called neurite outgrowth-the growth of nerve cell (neuron) projection.
