Hong Kong History and Cantonese Language (28 September, 5 and 26 October 2021)
The College was delighted to engage Mr George WAN to deliver a series of Night Talks regarding the history of Sung Wong Toi area, handwritten signboards in Hong Kong and the basics of Cantonese phonology on 28 September, 5 and 26 October 2021 respectively. It aimed to let students, both local and non-local, learn more about the interesting history and culture of Hong Kong.
In the first session, Mr WAN introduced the historical and geographical background of Kowloon City and Sung Wong Toi area. He also reviewed some of the cultural relics together with the relevant archeography from the Song Dynasty. The second session featured handwritten signs, a vanished industry in Hong Kong. In addition, he highlighted the inscriptions and antithetical couplets commonly seen in many Chinese buildings. During the third session, he shared the theory and rules on Cantonese phonology such as consonants, vowels, terminals and the nine tones. He also illustrated how to apply the rules to Tang poetry.
