They are Mr Tyler HEPLER and Miss Murong Tina LI. While both were from universities in the US, Tyler is an American from the University of South Carolina, and Tina a Chinese American from Brandeis University.
Prof Wai-Yee Chan generously sponsored a roast turkey, greatly increasing the festive mood of the occasion. The hosts prepared a great variety of treats, which included three baked pies — an apple pie, a pecan pie and a pumpkin pie — together with many soft drinks and snacks. The party began with Prof Chan and Prof Kenneth Young taking turns in carving the turkey, which was one of the highlights of the night.
Tyler gave a sharing on the history and current practice in thanksgiving celebration. Participants learnt about the first thanksgiving day, how it was made into an American national holiday, as well as the parade, the Black Friday and the Cyber Monday that have become part of American custom.
Learning History and Culture through Songs, Movies and Speeches
On 20, 22, 27 and 29 Sep 2016, Prof Frederick Cheung Hok Ming from the Department of History gave four workshops on the topic 'learning history'. Around 40 participants experienced a different way of learning history, as Prof Cheung cited interesting examples from a wealth of songs, movies and speeches. Participants were excited about the sharing and gave very positive feedbacks.
Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions
Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions encourage students to improve public speaking skills through prepared speeches, impromptu presentations and peer evaluation. Three sessions were held on 20 Oct 2016, 3 Nov 2016 and 1 Dec 2016 respectively.
Taiwanese Night
Mr Anthony Lin, Year 5 student, organised a Taiwanese Night on 27 October 2016. Himself a Taiwanese student, Anthony introduced unique festive attractions, such the 'flying fish festival' and the 'Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival'.
