Incoming Exchange Students in Term 2

A new batch of 17 incoming exchange students joined the College family in Term 2, 2016–17. They came from universities in Austria, Canada, elsewhere in China, Ireland, Korea, Mexico, Sweden, The Netherlands and the US.

Together with those who have been with us since the first semester, the College now hosts 27 incoming exchange students. They mingle with the rest of the College community, in sharing rooms, at communal dining and High Table Dinners, and in various events. Their presence enhance the diversity in the College and enacts an important element of the College vision.

Check them out from these photos, many taken at a welcome lunch on 13 January 2017, hosted by the College to welcome these newcomers from around the world.

Eye-opening Cantonese Opera

Mr Nathan Wong and Mr Eric Leung, both Year 4 students, arranged a cultural visit for our exchange students to a Cantonese opera show, Once Upon a Monkey (西遊記盤絲洞伊人), on 11 September 2016. The show features a rewritten love story based on an episode in Journey to the West (西遊記), one of the greatest known Chinese literature, with Chinese and English subtitles. The story celebrates perseverance against obstacles.

Miss Margrethe Raabjerg KRUSE from Denmark, Miss Johanna GROSS from Germany, and Miss Deyon Helena GASTON from the US watched and the show. Let's hear how they had enjoyed this new experience:

'It was a bit boring at first, but then the juggling, cartwheels, somersaults are very exciting and interesting.'

'The way they sing is very different from Western music.'

'Their traditional costumes are very beautiful.'

'The story teaches us something, that we should go on no matter what obstacles there are. This is something I don't see in Western opera.'
