News: Music of Lingnan Culture: Naamyam and Cantonese Music

That was an enjoyable evening, with the beautiful rhythm came along the melodious voice stretching around the campus on 10 December 2021. Thanks to the Music of Lingnan Culture: Naamyam and Cantonese Music, an event co-orgainised by the Institute of Chinese Studies and the Department of Music, CUHK, the audiences enjoyed the traditional music in the courtyard of the Institute of Chinese Studies. The concert was led by Professor Yuen Siu Fai, a Cantonese opera maestro, together with other performers including Ms. Leung Hoi Li, Mr. To Wing, Mr. Chan Kwok Fai, Mr. Ho Kang Ming and Mr. Chan Chi Chun. The pieces presented were as follows:

  1. Cantonese narrative: Naanyam
    “Burning Funerary Goods for His Love”, Soloist: Prof. Yuen Siu Fai
    “ Love’s Yearning”, Soloist: Ms. Leung Hoi Li
  2. Hakka guzheng and pipa music
  3. Chaozhou guzheng solo
  4. Pipa solo
  5. Dizi solo
  6. Ensemble of guzheng, yehu, and xiao
