Service Team Builds Intimate and Involved Community

Closing Ceremony at CUHK

The Service Team completed the summer project ʻUnderstanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths through a Social Service Endeavour 2016ʼ, the fourth in a series that began in 2013, with a Closing Ceremony held on 10 September 2016.

The project was supported by the I • CARE Service Projects Funding Scheme and The D. H. Chen Foundation. Prior to the Closing, participants joined a 3-day-2-night summer camp in July, where students from Po Leung Kuk CW Chu College (PLKCWC) built a strong bonding among themselves and with students from CWC. The Closing Ceremony was a happy reunion for these participants, attended by around 30 students of PLKCWC, its Vice-principal and teachers, as well as representatives of The D. H. Chen Foundation and the I • CARE Programme. They listened to participants' sharing, and had a casual tea gathering. College teachers and staff were also present to witness their joy.

Student reflection by YIP Cheuk Hei Michael (Year 2)

Being one of the members of the Service Team is undoubtedly an amazing experience for me!

When I was in high school, I had never thought of organising a large-scale service project. Joining the Service Team gave me the chance of doing so. To be honest, my team members and I really found it difficult since most of us did not have experience before. The biggest challenge was that we did not know what the elements of a successful camp are, including atmosphere control, grabbing participants' attention, and so on. Activities we designed might fail to achieve the initial goals, and so we had to learn very quickly in response to unexpected problems. Since so many parties were involved in this service project, we also encountered difficulties in dealing with information from different parties, which has taught me the importance of effective communication.

Volunteering

Two activities were initiated by the Fifth Service Team between December 2016 and January 2017.  Details are as follows:

a. Narcissus Root Cutting

The Service Team joined three volunteering sessions jointly organised by YMCA of Hong Kong and Munsang College including workshops of cutting and packaging the narcissus root on 18 December 2016 and 15 January 2017 respectively for over one thousand elderlies before the Chinese New Year. This activity encouraged participants to give support to the senior citizens, and to learn about Hong Kong culture. Charity sales of narcissus were held on 21 and 22 January 2017.

b. Christmas cards and gifts for CWC janitors and College Staff

To celebrate Christmas and to show appreciation, the Fifth Service Team presented Christmas gifts and cards to janitors working in CWC and to college staff on 21 December 2016.

An online form was created to collect messages from CWC students in mid-November 2016. The Service Team prepared gifts as well as hand-made Christmas cards. The initiative was sponsored by Ms Melody Lee, College Secretary, and Ms Cecilia Sit, Member of the Committee on Service.
